Geochemical significance of lithium and boron isotopic heterogeneity evolving during the crystallization of granitic melts

Xiu-Fang Lei et al.

Summary: We analyzed Li and B isotopes in muscovite, biotite, and feldspar + quartz from two types of granite samples collected in central China. Our results revealed systematic differences in isotopic compositions among these minerals. The study suggests that early-crystallizing minerals have lower 67Li and 611B values compared to the original melt, while residual melts and late magmatic fluids show anomalously high 67Li and 611B values. Additionally, our findings indicate that late melts and magmatic fluids do not reflect the composition of their source, and mineral-selective alteration by late magmatic fluids masks the source of the fluid.

Formation of giant copper deposits in Tibet driven by tearing of the subducted Indian plate

Zengqian Hou et al.

Summary: Through joint inversion of surface wave and satellite gravity data, we have revealed the lithospheric architecture of the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen, which hosts abundant Miocene giant to large porphyry copper deposits (PCDs). Our study shows that the subducted Indian continental lithosphere was torn into several pieces with different subduction angles during the Indo-Asia collision, providing channels for asthenospheric upwelling and triggering melting. The process generates melts that ascend and pond at the base of the crust, leading to high heat flow and supply of water for melting of the overlying thick crust and generation of granitoid magmas. The breakdown of sulfides in the lower crust increases the fertility of the magmas. Three key factors, a torn slab subducted at moderate angles, prior Cu enrichment in the lower crust, and trans-lithospheric structures for magma ascent, are essential for the formation of collision-related PCDs.

Lithium isotope fractionation during magmatic differentiation and hydrothermal processes in post-collisional adakitic rocks

Heng-Ci Tian et al.

Summary: By studying rocks from the Qulong region in southern Tibet, it was found that these rocks were most likely formed by various degrees of partial melting and fractional crystallization from the same source. The Li isotope composition did not show significant fractionation during partial melting and magma differentiation. The Cu mineralization was related to magmatic fluids exsolved from a deep magma chamber.

Extreme lithium isotope fractionation in quartz from the Stewart pegmatite

Patrick R. Phelps et al.

Summary: In this study, Li isotope compositions of quartz crystals from the Stewart pegmatite were analyzed, revealing extreme isotopic fractionations. The mechanisms of rapid crystal growth rate and Rayleigh fractionation were considered to explain the observed fractionations. The results suggest that both processes may have operated simultaneously, with trace element enrichments being more sensitive to growth rate and Li isotope ratios being more sensitive to changes in the isotopic composition of the pegmatitic fluids.

Tectonic evolution and multi-episodic metallogenesis of the Sanjiang Paleo-Tethys multi-arc-basin-terrane system, SW Tibetan Plateau

Wen-Chang Li et al.

Summary: The Sanjiang Tethys region in southwest China is a key precious/base metal province, with a multi-arc-basin-terrane structural framework that has evolved through prolonged terrane accretion processes. The region is divided into ten metallogenetic belts with diverse deposit types and mineral assemblages, which reveal a genetic link between the MABT system and the regional metallogenesis.

Multiple Tethyan ocean basins and orogenic belts in Asia

Ian Metcalfe

Summary: The evolution of Tethyan ocean basins in Asia spans over 500 million years, involving opening and closure of oceans, collision of continental blocks, and formation of major orogenic belts. This complex geological history has shaped Asia's landscape and mineral resource distribution significantly.

Remelting of a Neoproterozoic arc root: origin of the Pulang and Songnuo porphyry Cu deposits, Southwest China

Dian-Zhong Wang et al.

Summary: The Pulang and Songnuo porphyry Cu deposits were formed in a post-subduction setting from oxidized melts generated by reactivating the Neoproterozoic arc root, unrelated to Pale-Tethyan subduction. The deposits have high zircon Eu-N/Eu-N* ratios and calculated Delta log fO(2) (FMQ) values, consistent with relatively oxidized magmas, similar to the Neoproterozoic arc intrusions but distinct from the published data for the reduced normal Paleo-Tethyan arc magmas.
