Measurement and calibration of DEM parameters of lunar soil simulant

Jianzhong Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the lunar soil simulant parameters were calibrated using the discrete element method (DEM) to accurately simulate the interactions between the rover wheel and lunar soil simulant. Plackett-Burman, steepest ascent, and Box-Behnken experiments were used to propose a parameter calibration methodology. The calibrated parameters were employed for validation tests, and the results showed good agreement with experimental data.

3D DEM investigation of the resistance of ice and frozen granular soils

Guodong Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D model based on the distinct element method was introduced to evaluate the resistance of frozen soil. Preliminary simulations were performed to calibrate the DEM ice model and assess the relationship between micromechanical parameters and macroscopic behaviour. Triaxial compression and shear simulations were conducted on various ice-soil mixtures to describe and compare the obtained macroscopic behaviour with existing experimental data.

Calibration of wet sand and gravel particles based on JKR contact model

Jiacheng Zhou et al.

Summary: The parameters of wet sand and gravel particles with different shapes are calibrated based on the JKR contact model. Surface energy and rolling friction coefficient are found to be significant factors affecting the simulation accuracy of wet sand and gravel particles during vibration screening. The non-spherical model and JKR model are proven to better simulate the screening process, and the optimum filling ball radii for different particle shapes are determined.

Calibration of Contact Parameters for Moist Bulk of Shotcrete Based on EDEM

Guanguo Ma et al.

Summary: This study calibrated the contact parameters of the moist bulk of shotcrete accurately and quickly by using a physical stacking test and simulation method. The results showed that the JKR surface energy, rolling friction coefficient, and restitution coefficient significantly affected the angle of repose of the moist bulk of shotcrete. A regression model was established to predict the angle of repose based on these parameters.

Microscale Modeling of Frozen Particle Fluid Systems with a Bonded-Particle Model Method

Tsz Tung Chan et al.

Summary: An inventive microscale simulation approach using the discrete element method (DEM) and bonded-particle model (BPM) is applied to investigate the mechanics of frozen particle fluid systems (PFS). The study reveals that strain rate significantly affects the mechanical behavior and properties of the agglomerates, leading to the development of a new solid bond model for describing the rheology of the frozen particle fluid systems.

Effects of frozen water content and silt fraction on unconfined compressive behavior of fill materials

Sang Yeob Kim et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of fill materials in extreme regions are primarily determined by the characteristics of ice constituent and soil particles. This study investigated the unconfined compressive behavior of sand-silt mixed fill materials with various frozen water contents and silt fractions. The results showed that frozen water content and void ratio have significant effects on the unconfined compressive strength and stress at maximum curvature point. This study highlights the importance of considering frozen water content, silt fraction, and fracture mode when using sand-silt mixed materials for filling in extreme regions.

An approach to calibration of BPM bonding parameters for iron ore

Zeren Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of various factors on the bonded-particle model performances using EDEM software, proposes a calibration method for the bonding parameters, and verifies the reliability and validity of the method through DEM simulation. The compressive strength of the bonded-particle model is found to be jointly determined by critical normal stress and tangential stress.

An elasto-plastic constitutive model for frozen soil subjected to cyclic loading

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: A new elasto-plastic constitutive model was proposed to investigate the dynamic mechanical behaviors and volumetric strain of frozen soil under cyclic loading, and its suitability was confirmed through extensive experimental validation. The model captured basic dynamic characteristics such as nonlinear variation, hysteresis behaviors, and plastic strain accumulation behaviors in stress-strain and volumetric strain curves.
