Structural Analysis of Molecular Materials Using the Pair Distribution Function

Maxwell W. Terban et al.

Summary: This article reviews the application of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis in the study of molecular materials. The PDF method is a powerful tool for investigating short- and intermediate-range order in nanoscale materials. It can provide structural details that are obscured in reciprocal space by defects, disorder, or structural ambiguities. While its use in inorganic and nanomaterials research has been highlighted, significant progress has also been made in applying PDF analysis to molecular materials such as carbon, pharmaceuticals, polymers, liquids, coordination compounds, and composites. The article provides an overview of applications in a wide variety of molecular compounds and systems, and offers pedagogical descriptions and tips for implementation.

Effect of iron redox ratio on the structures of boroaluminosilicate glasses

Manzila Tuheen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of iron oxide, specifically the iron redox ratio, on the structures of borosilicate and boroaluminosilicate glasses using molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that trivalent ferric ions act as glass formers while divalent ferrous ions mainly play the role of glass modifiers.

Effect of modifier cation field strength on the structures of magnesium oxide containing aluminoborosilicate glasses

Manzila Islam Tuheen et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of cation field strength (CFS) on the structures of aluminoborosilicate glasses was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that cations with higher CFS significantly reduced the fraction of fourfold coordinated boron and had less effect on charge compensation.

In situ pair distribution function analysis of crystallizing Fe-silicate melts

Emily T. Nienhuis et al.

Summary: This study characterized the structures of a series of Na2O-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 melts using synchrotron X-ray total scattering with aerodynamic levitation and laser heating. The actual redox of the melts was found to be intermediate, with some Fe2+ present. Cooling of the melts resulted in the formation of magnetite on the sample surface, without any silica-containing crystalline phases observed.

A comparative study of the effectiveness of empirical potentials for molecular dynamics simulations of borosilicate glasses

Manzila Islam Tuheen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of three recently developed potentials for modeling sodium borosilicate glasses and sodium boroaluminosilicate glasses by comparing various structural features and mechanical properties. The results provide insights into the choices of empirical potentials for MD simulations of borosilicate glasses and give directions for future potential development and refinement.
