Characterizing spatial and temporal deforestation and its effects on surface urban heat islands in a tropical city using Landsat time series

Gerardo A. Carrillo-Niquete et al.

Summary: With the rapid population growth, Me ' rida city has become an attractive city for real-estate investment in southeast Mexico. However, this has led to deforestation and the formation of heat islands. By using Landsat images and the BFAST algorithm, this study analyzed the deforestation trends and identified the occurrence of heat islands in the city. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of Landsat images as tools for detecting deforestation and estimating land surface temperature.

Impacts of Urbanization Undermine Nestedness of the Plant-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Network

Litao Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that there are different characteristics in the plant-arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal association network between urban and rural areas. Urban areas have higher richness of root AM fungi, while rural areas exhibit significant nested relationships. The competition index of AM fungi in urban areas is lower and host plants show reduced selectivity for fungi in urban areas compared to rural areas.

Ecological consequences of urbanization on a legume-rhizobia mutualism

David Murray-Stoker et al.

Summary: The research revealed that as urbanization increases, the number of rhizobium nodules on white clover decreases, with N acquisition shifting from primarily through N fixation to mainly through soil absorption along the urbanization gradient. Soil N is identified as a critical factor influencing urban-driven changes in the white clover-rhizobium mutualism.

Soil infectivity and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi communities in four urban green sites in central Argentina

Paula A. Buil et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the AMF community composition and soil infectivity in urban sites with different disturbance levels and management histories in Cordoba, Argentina. The results showed that AMF communities were dominated by generalist species that are resilient to harsh environmental conditions. Urban forests had higher richness, diversity, and soil infectivity compared to parklands, with plant diversity, tree cover dominance, and soil compaction playing key roles in shaping AMF communities.
