N-Heterocyclic Carbene/Br?nsted Acid Cooperatively Catalyzed Conversions of ?, ?-Unsaturated Carbonyls: Hydrogen Bond Donor/ Acceptor-Electrophile/Nucleophile Combination Models

Xinghua Wang et al.

Summary: Great success has been achieved in the precise construction of C-C bonds under N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)/ Bronsted acid (BA) cooperative catalysis. However, the mechanism behind the acceleration of conversions of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyls by NHC and BA co-catalyst remains unclear. In this study, several representative NHC/BA cooperative catalysis models were systematically studied to enhance chemists' understanding of these reactions. The identification and confirmation of favorable models for the NHC/BA cooperatively catalyzed reactions of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyls were done using proposed combination rules of hydrogen bond donor/acceptor-electrophile/nucleophile and reactivity index (Rk). This work is significant for comprehending the cooperative catalytic mechanism and provides valuable insights for designing efficient cooperative catalytic reactions with specific selectivity.

Palladium-Catalyzed Hydrosilylation of Unactivated Alkenes and Conjugated Dienes with Tertiary Silanes Controlled by Hemilabile Hybrid P,O Ligand

Sanghyup Seo et al.

Summary: Novel P, O-type ligands, N-disulfonyl bicyclic bridgehead phosphorus triamides, exhibited high reactivity in Pd-catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions involving tertiary silanes, unactivated alkenes, and conjugated dienes. The use of these ligands significantly improved the regioselectivity of diene hydrosilylation towards 1,2-hydrosilylation. Experimental and computational studies confirmed the bidentate nature of the ligand and provided insights into the reaction mechanism.

Shuang-Liang Liu et al.

Summary: A general mechanistic map has been proposed and studied for NHC-catalyzed transformation reactions of saturated carboxylic anhydrides, predicting the origin of chemo- and stereo-selectivities. The fundamental pathway of this reaction includes processes such as C-O bond cleavage, alpha-H elimination, beta-H elimination, functionalization with benzylidene diketone, acyl migration, aldol addition, catalyst dissociation, and decarboxylation. The chemoselectivities in other pathways and the stereoselectivity-determining step have also been investigated.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC)-Catalyzed Transformations Involving Azolium Enolates

Santigopal Mondal et al.

Summary: This article highlights the recent advances in the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-organocatalyzed generation of azolium enolate intermediates and their subsequent interception with electrophiles. The NHC-bound azolium intermediates are generated by adding NHCs to suitably substituted aldehydes, acid derivatives, or ketenes. A wide range of coupling partners can intercept the azolium enolates to form [2+n] cycloadducts (n=2,3,4) and various alpha-functionalized compounds. Enantioselective synthesis of the target compounds is achieved with chiral NHCs.

Ligand-Controlled Site- and Enantioselective Carbene Insertion into Carbon-Silicon Bonds of Benzosilacyclobutanes

Jingfeng Huo et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient palladium-catalyzed carbene insertion reaction into strained Si-C bonds of benzosilacyclobutanes was reported, providing an efficient method for accessing alpha-chiral silanes. It was found that with a sterically hindered ligand, the carbene insertion occurred selectively on the C(sp(3))-Si bond of benzosilacyclobutanes with excellent site- and enantioselectivity, while selectively occurred on the C(sp(2))-Si bond with less sterically hindered ligands. The reaction mechanism, particularly the roles of chiral ligands in controlling the site-selectivity of the insertion reactions, was elucidated using hybrid density functional theory.

Sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms can be activated in this manner to construct chiral carbon-heteroatom bonds with high optical enantioselectivities. The key lies in the formation of intermediates covalently bound to the NHC catalyst, in which the heteroatom of the substrate is activated as a nucleophilic reactive site.
