Equivalent damping ratio for mixed structures including the soil-structure interaction

Ali Kaveh et al.

Summary: The behavior of mixed structures and their interaction with underlying soil pose challenges for engineers. Current codes and software packages do not address these issues. This study proposes an improved method of using equivalent damping ratios to better approximate the actual behavior of mixed structures.

Complex mode superposition method of nonproportionally damped linear systems with hysteretic damping

Panxu Sun et al.

Summary: The proposed complex mode superposition method based on the hysteretic damping model provides a unique and efficient approach for calculating vibration responses in nonproportionally damped linear systems. The method, implemented through user subroutines in ANSYS and MATLAB, shows higher accuracy and effectiveness compared to traditional methods. Shaking table tests further validate the unconditional convergence and independence of time step of the proposed method in time-domain dynamic analyses.

A non-linear model for elastic hysteresis in the time domain: Computational procedure

M. M. S. Dwaikat et al.

Summary: This paper proposed a new model and numerical procedure for achieving hysteretic material damping in the time domain by modifying the viscous model. The superiority of this method lies in its ability to capture material hysteresis without the need for knowledge of the system's natural frequencies or the past time history of the response.

Experimental and Numerical Study of Strength and Failure Behavior of Precracked Marble under True Triaxial Compression

Yong Han et al.

Summary: The study found that the angle and density of preexisting cracks can affect the compressive strength and failure behavior of rock specimens, with cracks initiating and coalescing at inner and outer tips, while main shear failure in specimens with multiple non-parallel cracks originates from one of the macroscopic preexisting cracks.

A non-linear model for elastic hysteresis in the time domain: Implementation for multiple degrees of freedom

M. M. S. Dwaikat et al.

Summary: The proposed model captures the weak frequency sensitivity of elastic hysteretic damping for MDOF structures under free or forced vibration. By adjusting the damping coefficient to keep the dissipated energy insensitive to the frequency characteristics, it outperforms other damping models like viscous, Rayleigh, and Reid MDOF models. It does not require extensive calibration or knowledge of motion history.

Frequency-Dependent Damping Properties of Recycled Aggregate Concrete

Chaofeng Liang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the frequency-dependent damping properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and provided new insights into the damping mechanism of RAC. The study found that the damping of RAC is more frequency-sensitive than that of natural aggregate concrete (NAC), with damping parameters decreasing as loading frequency increases. Additionally, a linear relation was established between the damping parameters and the mortar content of RAC.

Effect of the elastic hysteresis term formulation and response to non-harmonic periodic excitations of a non-linear SDOF dynamical model with weak frequency-dependency in the time domain

Christos Spitas et al.

Summary: The article presents a SDOF time-domain model for elastic hysteretic damping, with a focus on introducing an instantaneous correction factor recursively dependent on system state variables to achieve weak frequency dependency. Different formulations for calculating the correction factor's impact on predicted hysteresis loops and potential singularities are investigated, alongside plotting hysteresis loops and simulating forced vibration responses to various excitations for comparison with conventional damping models.
