Improved models of failure time for atmospheric tanks under the coupling effect of multiple pool fires

Jiahao Yang et al.

Summary: Fire accidents in chemical installations can lead to domino effects in atmospheric tank farms storing or processing hazardous substances. Pool fires are a major cause of these accidents, and the primary hazard in domino accidents is the thermal radiation from pool fires. Previous research has focused on the escalation of domino accidents caused by a single pool fire, but this study investigates the failure of a storage tank under the coupling effect of multiple pool fires in terms of spatial and temporal synergistic processes. The study analyzes the scenario of two-pool fires, which accounted for 30.6% of pool fires according to historical accident statistics. The thermal response and damage of a target tank heated by pool fires were investigated numerically. The results showed that the temperature rise rate of the target tanks under multiple pool fires was higher, and the failure time of the tank under the coupling effect of multiple fires was lower compared to the superposition of multiple fires without the first stage. A model for the failure time of the tank under the coupling effect of pool fires was established and verified, showing better deviation than Cozzani's model.

A Petri-net approach for firefighting force allocation analysis of fire emergency response with backups

Jianfeng Zhou et al.

Summary: Fire is a common and dangerous scenario in chemical and process plants, and it can lead to domino effects. In addition to safety barriers, emergency response is necessary to prevent fire escalation. However, single emergency response departments may lack capacity, requiring backup. This study develops a method to optimize the allocation of emergency response forces, particularly focusing on front-line departments. The emergency response from front-line departments can reduce thermal radiation and prolong equipment failure, allowing backups more time to arrive at the fire scene.
