A brief introduction to the detrital zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopic datasets for mainland China and adjacent regions

Jianghai Yang et al.

Summary: Improvements in analytical technique and data processing have led to the collection of a large dataset of detrital zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopic data. These data can be used for studying crustal growth, tectonic evolution, provenance analysis, and paleogeographical changes.

Revisiting Phanerozoic evolution of the Qinling Orogen (East Tethys) with perspectives of detrital zircon

Hao-Cheng Yu et al.

Summary: This paper presents detrital zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic data, providing new insights into the Phanerozoic tectonic evolution of the Qinling Orogen. The study reveals the initial spreading and final closure of the Mianlue Ocean, which played a significant role in the formation and tectonic activities of the Qinling Orogen.

Revisiting the paleogeographic framework of northeastern Gondwana in the late Paleozoic: Implications from detrital zircon analysis

Biao Gao et al.

Summary: The Baoshan, Tengchong, Lhasa, South Qiangtang, and Sibumasu terranes were part of Gondwana before separating and moving away from the northern margin in the Early Permian. The paleopositions of these terranes during the late Paleozoic are still debated, which hampers the understanding of the tectonic evolution of the PaleoTethys and glacier distribution patterns on eastern Gondwana during the late Paleozoic ice age. Through analysis of detrital zircon U-Pb dating and Hf isotope signatures, this study proposes a new paleogeographic model that suggests the South Qiangtang, Baoshan, and part of Sibumasu were located outside the northern margin of Indian Gondwana, while the Lhasa and Sumatra terranes were along the northern margin of Australia. Based on shifts in provenance of late Paleozoic glaciogenic sedimentary rocks, the study also hypothesizes the development of two main ice sheets during the late Paleozoic. This research contributes to the understanding of the late Paleozoic tectonic and paleoclimatic history of Gondwana.

Cross Orogenic Belts in Central China: Implications for the tectonic and paleogeographic evolution of the East Asian continental collage

Yunpeng Dong et al.

Summary: The East Asian continent has a complex geological and tectonic history that shaped the formation and evolution of the China continent. The Central China Orogenic Belt and the Helan-Chuandian Orogenic Belt, known as the Cross Orogenic Belts, played a crucial role in controlling the geological, geographical, ecological, environmental, economic, and cultural division of the China continent. The uplift of these belts influenced the climate, environment, economy, and culture in different regions of China.

Quantifying the Link Between the Detrital Zircon Record and Tectonic Settings

Dongchuan Jian et al.

Summary: Full-plate reconstructions are crucial for understanding the history of continental motions and plate boundary evolution. Traditional methods rely on geophysical data and paleomagnetism, but do not directly determine the paths of subduction zones and other plate boundaries. In this study, we analyze detrital zircon age spectra to characterize tectonic settings in deep time and find a success rate of approximately 70% in distinguishing convergent settings. The ability to define extensional settings is less clear. However, the overall pattern suggests that zircon data can help quantify uncertainties in full-plate reconstructions and distinguish between competing models for Proterozoic supercontinents.

Impact of climate on landscape form, sediment transfer and the sedimentary record

Rebekah M. Harries et al.

Summary: The study finds that the proportion of bedrock in the sedimentary fan systems is underestimated due to sediment storage in widened glacial valleys. Precipitation leads to catchment-wide trends in either main valley incision or aggradation, and poor hillslope-channel connectivity in dry catchments results in export of gravel depleted in clasts sourced from the upper cordillera.

Central China Orogenic Belt and amalgamation of East Asian continents

Yunpeng Dong et al.

Summary: The Central China Orogenic Belt (CCOB) consists of multiple important orogens that record the continental collision history of the North China, South China, Qaidam, Tarim and Qiangtang Blocks. From around 550 million years ago, the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent led to the formation of the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and subsequent processes such as spreading and subduction shaped the evolution of the CCOB. The CCOB has undergone a complex tectonic evolution from the early Proto-Tethys to the later Paleo-Tethys domains, leading to the formation and closure of various oceans and back-arc basins.

Zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotope analysis of Neoproterozoic Yaolinghe Group sedimentary rocks in the Chengkou area, South Qinling: Provenance and paleogeographic implications

Hanyu Huang et al.

Summary: The sedimentary rocks of the Yaolinghe Group in the Chengkou area, China, were primarily formed by near-source accumulation in a rift setting, constrained to the Neoproterozoic Cryogenian period. Detrital zircons with ages from 1000-635 Ma were derived from the South Qinling and Northern Yangtze blocks, indicating a small amount of recycled zircon within the formation. Further study suggests that these rocks record the history of the last stage of Rodinia breakup in the region.

Early Triassic initial collision between the North China and South China blocks in the eastern Qinling Orogenic Belt

Qianli Ma et al.

Summary: This study presents stratigraphic, sedimentological, and provenance data from the Triassic strata in the Zigui and Dangyang basins along the eastern Qinling Orogenic Belt, providing constraints on the timing of initial South China Block-North China Block collision. The detrital zircon U-Pb ages indicate a significant provenance change from recycled material derived from the South China Block to newly generated detrital material from the North China Block, recording the initial collision.
