The magmatism of Atienza (NW Iberian Chain, Spain): age, origin and architecture of the magmatic plumbing system

Urbez Majarena et al.

Summary: This article studies some volcanic rocks in the Atienza area of the Iberian Chain in Spain. Based on the analysis of rock composition and geochemical characteristics, it is found that the magma originated from crustal melting, which is related to the folding of the Variscan Orogen and the Iberian Massif.

The Artinskian Warming Event: an Euramerican change in climate and the terrestrial biota during the early Permian

Lorenzo Marchetti et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively revised the late Cisuralian central Pangaea and found a significant increase in drought-tolerant forms during the Artinskian period, possibly due to a global climatic event caused by volcanic eruptions that led to the final melting of the Gondwanan ice sheets.

Vertebrate tracks from the Permian of Gonfaron (Provence, Southern France) and their implications for the late Capitanian terrestrial extinction event

Lorenzo Marchetti et al.

Summary: This study revises and identifies the tetrapod ichnoassociation from the Pe 'litique Formation in the Le Luc Basin of Provence, providing evidence of the post-dinocephalian extinction recovery in the late Capitanian. This extinction event was possibly linked to a global benthic marine mass extinction and the climatic perturbation caused by volcanic activity in China. The findings confirm the global impact of the late Capitanian terrestrial mass extinction and the subsequent recovery in low-latitude realms.

First record of permian continental trace fossils in the jebilet massif, Morocco

Amal Zouicha et al.

Summary: The south-central Moroccan Jebilet Massif contains late Paleozoic continental red-beds with a diverse assemblage of continental trace fossils, suggesting a Pennsylvanian-Permian age. Recent fieldwork in the Koudiat El Hamra - Haiane Basin revealed tetrapod footprints indicating a late early Permian to middle Permian age for the fossil-bearing strata. The fossil ichnofauna in the Koudiat El Hamra - Haiane Basin shows similarities to the one found in the north-central Moroccan Tiddas Basin, indicating possible contemporaneous development.

Transition between Variscan and Alpine cycles in the Pyrenean-Cantabrian Mountains (N Spain): Geodynamic evolution of near-equator European Permian basins

Joan Lloret et al.

Summary: This study integrates detailed stratigraphic, sedimentary, tectonic, paleosol, and magmatic data to reveal a similar geodynamic evolution across the Pyrenean-Cantabrian Ranges at the end of the Variscan cycle. The lower-middle Permian basins started their development under an extensional regime related to the end of the Variscan Belt collapse, transitioning to Pangea breakup in the middle Permian times. The comparison with other basins near the paleoequator shows common features of magmatic activity, extensional tectonics, high subsidence rates, thick sedimentary records, and periods without sedimentation, providing a better understanding of major crustal re-equilibration and reorganization in Western-Central Europe during the post-Variscan period.

EXTENDING THE FOOTPRINT RECORD OF PAREIASAUROMORPHA TO THE CISURALIAN: EARLIER APPEARANCE AND WIDER PALAEOBIOGEOGRAPHY OF THE GROUP

Lorenzo Marchetti et al.

Summary: Pareiasauromorpha is a significant tetrapod group in the Permian period, with its footprints dating back to the late Kungurian in North America. Through a revision of early Permian footprints in Europe and North America, the origin of the ichnogenus Pachypes and its correlation with nycteroleter pareiasauromorphs like Macroleter have been confirmed. This discovery pushes the earliest occurrences of pareiasauromorph footprints back by at least 10 million years before their skeletal records.

Insights on the evolution of synapsid locomotion based on tetrapod tracks from the lower Permian of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean)

Rafel Matamales-Andreu et al.

Summary: Pelycosaur-grade synapsids were successful terrestrial tetrapods during the Carboniferous and Permian periods, utilizing a wide range of ecological niches and potentially serving as trackmakers. Research indicates that their locomotion may have involved alternating use of forelimbs and hindlimbs, along with lateral undulation of the spine.

The Late Capitanian Mass Extinction of Terrestrial Vertebrates in the Karoo Basin of South Africa

Michael O. Day et al.

Summary: The Beaufort Group in the main Karoo Basin of South Africa has documented two major extinction events of terrestrial vertebrates in the late Paleozoic period, with the oldest dating back to the late Capitanian. This extinction event coincided with volcanism in the Emeishan Large Igneous Province and may have been partly driven by short-term aridification.

Rafel Matamales-Andreu et al.

Summary: During the Early-Middle Triassic, the biosphere was recovering from the severe mass extinction event, with the stratigraphic succession on present-day Mallorca showing four alluvial/fluvial formations. The richest fossil assemblage was found in the Estellencs Formation, representing a complex lotic/riverine ecosystem with a diverse range of fossils.

They help differentiate lithostratigraphic units in deformed basins and offer information on landscape evolution under changing tectonic and paleoclimatic conditions.

Hyloidichnus trackways with digit and tail drag traces from the Permian of Gonfaron (Var, France): New insights on the locomotion of captorhinomorph eureptiles

A. Logghe et al.

Summary: This study describes and categorizes newly discovered Hyloidichnus footprints from the middle Permian Pelitic Formation of Gonfaron in France, shedding light on possible trackmakers. Through detailed comparative analysis with Captorhinus and other captorhinomorphs, it enhances our understanding of locomotion styles of these tetrapods. High-resolution 3D models and analysis of tail impressions highlight the connection between gait and track preservation.

Tracking the Origin and Early Evolution of Reptiles

Lorenzo Marchetti et al.

Summary: The origin and distribution of early representatives of Reptilia are still poorly understood. This study revises the ichnotaxon Hylopus hardingi based on anatomy-consistent material and distinguishes it from other early reptile tracks. Multivariate analysis indicates differences in trackway patterns between different time periods, expanding our understanding of the evolution and biogeography of early reptiles.
