What adverse health effects will environmental heavy metal co-exposure bring us: based on a biological monitoring study of sanitation workers

Zhilin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between health effects and co-exposure to heavy metals in 254 sanitation workers from Guangzhou, China. Cobalt, copper, molybdenum, nickel, and tin were found to have the strongest associations with human health. Most physical examination parameters were normal, but some indicators related to lung function and lipid metabolism were abnormal. Copper was significantly associated with diastolic pressure, pulse, and high density lipid. Molybdenum exposure was related to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, while nickel and tin exposure increased the risk of respiratory diseases.

Risk assessment of trace metals in Solanum lycopersicum L. (tomato) grown under wastewater irrigation conditions

Dalia Abd El-Azeem Ahmed et al.

Summary: This research investigated the effects of toxic metals on tomato plants grown under wastewater irrigation, as well as the potential consequences of consuming these plants by both domestic and foreign individuals. The study found that using wastewater for irrigation led to a decrease in soil and tomato plant nutrients, while significantly increasing the concentration of toxic metals. Tomato plants grown with untreated wastewater may pose a greater danger to human health and should not be grown as a crop for human consumption.

Raphael Cornu et al.

Summary: Titanium dioxide nanoparticles, commonly used in the food industry, may pose potential health risks when ingested, leading to chronic intestinal inflammation and increased risk of carcinogenesis. Children are particularly vulnerable to exposure, and maternal-foetal transfer during pregnancy and breastfeeding further contribute to offspring exposure. France has suspended the use of E171 as a precautionary measure. Further research is needed to understand the effects of oral exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles, especially on the gastrointestinal tract.
