Removal of lindane in liquid culture using soil bacteria and toxicity assessment in human skin fibroblast and HCT116 cell lines

Banishree Sahoo et al.

Summary: In this study, a potent lindane degrading bacteria, Rhodococcus rhodochrous NITDBS9, was isolated from an agricultural field in Odisha, India. The bacteria showed abilities for lindane degradation and plant growth promotion. The combination with another strain further enhanced the removal efficiency of lindane. Moreover, the toxicity of lindane was significantly reduced after treatment with these bacteria.

In Situ Bioreduction of Hexavalent Chromium-Contaminated Water Using a Microbial Culture Barrier

Buyisile Kholisa et al.

Summary: Chromium (Cr) is widely used in various industries, but inappropriate disposal of effluent has led to increased concentrations of Cr in the environment. Bioremediation using municipal dried sludge as a permeable bioreactive barrier has been found to be a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for treating Cr(VI)-contaminated effluents. This study investigated the removal of Cr(VI) in a bench-scale bioreactor, and the results showed that a 20-cm-thick permeable bioreactive barrier with 30% sludge and 70% sand achieved 95% Cr(VI) removal during a 90-day operation, demonstrating the effectiveness of the biological permeable reactive barrier system in treating Cr(VI)-containing process effluent streams.

Isolation and characterization of a highly effective bacterium Bacillus cereus b-525k for hexavalent chromium detoxification

Amina Elahi et al.

Summary: The chromate resistant bacterium Bacillus cereus b-525k isolated from tannery effluents exhibited high tolerance to various toxic metal ions and showed efficient biosorption of chromium. The bacterium also showed significant production of antioxidant enzymes under chromate stress, alleviating oxidative damage. Pilot-scale experiments demonstrated that Bacillus cereus b-525k effectively removed chromium from tannery effluents, suggesting its potential application in chromate-contaminated sites.

Simultaneous Bioremediation of Cyanide, Phenol, and Ammoniacal-N from Synthetic Coke-Oven Wastewater Using Bacillus sp. NITD 19

Abhilasha Rai et al.

Summary: The study focused on the simultaneous removal of pollutants from synthetic coke-oven wastewater using a bacterial isolate, Bacillus sp. NITD 19. The most effective conditions were determined through OVAT analysis, resulting in high removal rates of phenol, ammoniacal-N, and cyanide from both individual aqueous solution and SCW. The biomass extracted from SCW solution was found to be lower than that obtained from treating individual pollutants, as confirmed by FTIR and SDS-PAGE analysis.

Summary: This study aims to isolate and characterize a Bacillus strain that can reduce the toxicity of hexavalent chromium. The bacteria was found to be effective in bioremediation with a maximum efficiency of 95.24% at 40 mg/L Cr6+ concentration, pH 7, and 4% inoculum concentration. Various analytical methods were used to understand the remediation process, and a prediction model and optimization strategy were developed for the bacterium. The results suggest that this isolate shows potential as a bioremediation agent for hexavalent chromium removal.
