Rapid enrichment of anammox bacteria and transformation to partial denitrification/anammox with nitrification/denitrification sludge

Yunlong Su et al.

Summary: The study developed a Partial-Denitrification (PD) system that rapidly reduced nitrate to nitrite within 40 days, using nitrification/denitrification sludge from a wastewater treatment plant. After 79 days of operation, the system achieved a successful transformation into an efficient PD/Anammox (PD/A) process, with significantly increased anammox activity and nitrogen removal efficiency. The study provides new insights into the scaling application of anammox by integrating PD, shortening startup periods, and improving TN removal efficiency.

Highly Enriched Anammox Bacteria with a Novel Granulation Model Regulated by Epistylis spp. in Domestic Wastewater Treatment

Qiongpeng Dan et al.

Summary: This study revealed a novel granulation model regulated by Epistylis spp. for highly enriched AnAOB. The stalks of Epistylis spp. acted as the skeleton of granules and provided attachment points for bacterial colonization, while the expanded biomass layer provided more area for the unstalked free-swimming zooids. Additionally, Epistylis spp. exerted less predation stress on AnAOB and AnAOB tended to grow in aggregates in the interior of granules, favoring their growth and retention.
