Shedding new light on the dislocation-mediated plasticity in wurtzite ZnO single crystals by photoindentation

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of light illumination on dislocation-mediated plasticity in hexagonal wurtzite ZnO. It is found that light illumination suppresses dislocation behavior, leading to differences in activation volume and dislocation glide under different light conditions.

Interstitial effects on the incipient plasticity and dislocation behavior of a metastable high-entropy alloy: Nanoindentation experiments and statistical modeling

Kefu Gan et al.

Summary: Metastable high-entropy alloys exhibit excellent strength-plasticity synergy through partial dislocation-assisted twinning and/or displacive transformation. This study provides quantitative insights into dislocation nucleation and the effects of interstitial alloying elements using instrumented nanoindentation experiments and statistical physical modeling, shedding light on the fundamental mechanisms in these emerging materials.

Photoindentation: A New Route to Understanding Dislocation Behavior in Light

Atsutomo Nakamura et al.

Summary: Recent studies have discovered significant plasticity in bulk compression of single-crystal ZnS under complete darkness. The introduction of the photoindentation technique provides a new approach to understand the effects of light on dislocation nucleation and mobility. Research shows that light irradiation significantly increases the pop-in stress of dislocation nucleation near the surface of ZnS, leading to a drastic reduction in dislocation mobility.

Nanoindentation pop-in in oxides at room temperature: Dislocation activation or crack formation?

Xufei Fang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a size-dependent brittle to ductile transition in SrTiO3 ceramics at room temperature, showing a competition between dislocation-mediated plasticity and crack formation during nanoindentation pop-in events. This finding sheds light on the deformation mechanism in ceramics at the nano-/microscale level involving plasticity and cracking, providing insights for further study on dislocation-based mechanics and functionalities in these materials.
