More than aphids in the guts of coccinellids revealed by molecular and visual analyses

Through DNA metabarcoding analysis, it was found that coccinellids have a diverse diet and can consume alternative prey like pollen to sustain their presence in the fields. Summary: The indirect effect of seminatural habitats on pest suppression has been widely studied, while the role of crop diversity on pest suppression by predators and the differences between early- and late-season effects of landscape complexity on pest control have received little attention. This study investigates the effect of agricultural landscape complexity and crop diversity on cereal leaf beetle predation, finding that woodland habitat and a few major crops are associated with higher predation at different temporal scales. The results emphasize the important contribution of some generalist predators to pest control.
