Polyamide microplastics as better environmental vectors of Cr(VI) in comparison to polyethylene and polypropylene microplastics

Xuechun Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption, desorption, and factors influencing the behavior of Cr(VI) on microplastics (MPs) in solution. The results showed that UV aging increased adsorption, while higher salinity and natural organic matter inhibited adsorption. Particle size affected the active adsorption sites on MPs, while pH influenced the electrostatic force. The dominant mechanism of Cr(VI) adsorption by MPs was physical adsorption, and the highest adsorption capacity was observed for polyamide (PA) MPs due to their hydrophilic amide groups. However, only PA MPs released Cr(VI), with the highest desorption rate in seawater.

Surface change of microplastics in aquatic environment and the removal by froth flotation assisted with cationic and anionic surfactants

Hongru Jiang et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are released into the environment due to the widespread usage and improper management of plastics. This study found that exposure to the natural environment increases the hydrophilicity of MPs. The flotation efficiency of different types of MPs decreased to zero after six months of natural incubation in rivers. Surfactants were applied to enhance the hydrophobicity and flotation efficiency of MPs.

Accumulation, chemical speciation and ecological risks of heavy metals on expanded polystyrene microplastics in seawater

Qun Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accumulation and speciation distribution of heavy metals on EPS microplastics (MPs) and their potential ecological risks to marine organisms. The results showed that heavy metals accumulated on the EPS MPs over time, and they had different speciation distributions. Compared to sediments, heavy metals on aged EPS MPs had higher migration and bioavailability. Considering accumulation amount, chemical speciation, and toxicity, the risk levels of heavy metals on EPS MPs were in the order of Cd > Pb > As > Ni > Cu > Zn. The ecological risk of heavy metals on EPS MPs increased over time, with Cd, Pb, As, and Ni being the primary contributing factors.

Investigation of the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) onto natural-aged microplastics as affected by salt ions

Si Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) on natural-aged and virgin microplastics in different electrolyte solutions. The results showed that natural-aged microplastics had higher adsorption capacity for Pb(II) compared to virgin ones, and the addition of CaCl2 strongly inhibited the adsorption amount of Pb(II). The adsorption kinetics of Pb(II) were better fitted by the pseudo-second order model and Elovich equation and were slowed down greatly at higher ionic strength. The adsorption isotherm of Pb(II) onto microplastics affected by salt ions can be well described by Freundlich model, suggesting a multilayer and heterogeneous adsorption process. pH and fulvic acid in the electrolyte solutions significantly influenced the adsorption of Pb(II) due to changes in electrostatic interactions. Higher pH and ionic strength in different environmental water dramatically decreased the adsorption capacity onto microplastics. The adsorption mechanisms affected by salt ions mainly involve electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, and ionic exchange.

Adsorption mechanism of trace heavy metals on microplastics and simulating their effect on microalgae in river

Qian Liu et al.

Summary: Microplastics act as carriers for heavy metals and increase their transport in freshwater systems. Different types of microplastics had similar adsorption kinetics for different heavy metals, mainly controlled by intra-particle diffusion, and occurred in the form of monolayer physical adsorption. Higher temperature and lower salinity improved the affinity of microplastics towards heavy metals. The main adsorption mechanism was electrostatic force interaction, with oxygen-containing functional groups, 7C-7C interaction, and halogen bonds playing important roles. Microplastics and heavy metals inhibited the growth of microalgae, but the toxicity of a mixture of lead and microplastics was reduced.
