Corpus-based bundle analysis to disciplinary variations: Relocating the role of bundle extraction criteria

Xia Liu et al.

Summary: Previous research on lexical bundles has generated discussions on disciplinary variations and the disciplinary specificity-generality spectrum. This study investigates the impact of bundle extraction criteria (frequency, dispersion, and bundle length) on conclusions regarding disciplinary variations and specificity-generality. Using a balanced design and an 11-million corpus of academic journal articles from eight disciplines, the study reveals clear disciplinary variations and a strong inclination towards disciplinary specificity. The findings also highlight the importance of methodological criteria, particularly in analyzing disciplinary specificity or generality, with the choice of '4-word' bundles showing a higher degree of disciplinary specificity.

A multi-dimensional analysis of conclusions in research articles: Variation across disciplines

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: This study examines the linguistic variation in the conclusion sections of research articles across six disciplines, using Biber's dimensions. The findings show significant differences in the conclusion writers' use of Involved and Informational Discourse, Narrative and Non-Narrative, and Overt Expression of Persuasion in natural sciences and social sciences. The conclusions in all six disciplines tend to employ possibility modals and prediction modals to evaluate studies and refer to future research directions. Additionally, conclusions in education and sociology contain more interaction and persuasion elements, while those in natural sciences are more information-condensed and procedure-oriented.
