Bending Properties and Vibration Characteristics of Dowel-Laminated Timber Panels Made with Short Salvaged Timber Elements

Summary: In this research, a new approach is proposed for reusing short, salvaged timber elements combined with new timber boards to fabricate dowel-laminated timber (DLT) panels without significant processing or end-to-end joining or gluing. The results showed that the short, salvaged timber elements can contribute significantly to the bending stiffness of the DLT panels without requiring additional joining or gluing, resulting in similar stiffness properties compared to conventional DLT panels. The strength of the panels is mainly governed by the quality of the new timber boards.

Prediction of the mechanical properties of timber members in existing structures using the dynamic modulus of elasticity and visual grading parameters

Summary: In this study, the modulus of elasticity and bending strength of structural Salzmann pine timber from an 18th century structure were estimated using semi-destructive density estimation and acoustic wave velocity methods. The results were compared, and predictive models for modulus of elasticity and bending strength were proposed, with an improvement in the prediction of bending strength when grading parameters were included.

Non-destructive evaluating the density and mechanical properties of ancient timber members based on machine learning approach

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of ancient timber members using non-destructive testing, colour parameters, and machine learning approaches. The results indicate that the developed relevance vector machine models have better evaluation performance than multiple linear regression models. The proposed approach provides an effective and accurate tool for the non-destructive evaluation of the density and mechanical properties of ancient timber members.

Building design and construction strategies for a circular economy

Summary: The environmental impacts, resource consumption and waste generation from buildings have raised concerns in the political and industry sectors. Interest in adopting circular economy strategies to address these issues has grown, but there is still a lack of widespread adoption and fragmented development and implementation of circular economy strategies in the building industry. A systematic literature review was conducted to assess the connection between circular economy and design and construction strategies for new buildings. The study reveals the development of this field and provides directions for future research. The study also highlights the lack of knowledge about the environmental performance and benefits of different building design and construction strategies, which hinders the greater adoption of circular economy in the industry.
