Friction and wear behavior of suspension plasma sprayed tantalum oxide coatings at elevated temperatures

Amit Roy et al.

Summary: Tantalum oxide-based coatings have been developed by suspension plasma spraying and their tribological behavior at high temperatures has been evaluated. The coatings exhibit uniform and dense nanostructure with no phase transformation. The friction coefficient of the coatings decreases slightly from 0.9 at 25 degrees C to 0.8 at 300 degrees C, while the wear rate decreases by more than 50%. The decrease in friction and wear at elevated temperatures is attributed to the formation of a smooth continuous layer and a stable transfer film.

Experimental study on the thermal characteristics of a 3D thermosyphon heat sink

S. Y. Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional thermosyphon (3D-TS) heat sink was experimentally investigated, which combined the advantages of vapor chamber, thermosyphon, and folded fins. The results showed that the overall thermal resistance had a negative correlation with the heating power and air volume flow rate, with the lowest thermal resistance of 0.14 K.W-1 achieved. The high temperature on the folded fins indicated the extension of phase change heat transfer from the flat vapor chamber to the vertical thermosyphon tubes. It was also found that a relatively large air volume flow rate could not further reduce the overall thermal resistance for a small heating power.

Xiaoping Yang et al.

Summary: To solve the disadvantages of traditional phase-change heat dissipation technologies, a mechanical-capillary driven hybrid phase-change loop (HPCL) is designed and tested. The experiment results show that heating power and liquid-vapor pressure difference have a decisive influence on heat transfer modes. Thin film evaporation has the advantage of short start-up time and high heat transfer efficiency. Increasing the liquid-vapor pressure difference enhances heat dissipation power, and controlling liquid-vapor pressure difference enables accurate temperature control.

Self-peeling of frozen water droplets upon impacting a cold surface

Wen-Zhen Fang et al.

Summary: This study reports a passive ice removal method by utilizing the thermal-mechanical stress of ice for the self-peeling of frozen water droplets upon impacting a cold substrate. The study found that the frozen ice can completely self-peel and be easily removed from a cold hydrophobic surface, while it exhibits cracking and remains firmly sticky to a hydrophilic surface. Experimental and theoretical investigations were conducted to analyze the peeling behaviors of frozen water droplets and a simple criterion for predicting complete self-peeling was proposed to facilitate the design of anti-icing surfaces.

Heat transfer enhancement of phase change materials embedded with metal foam for thermal energy storage: A review

Wei Cui et al.

Summary: Phase change materials (PCMs) have the potential to improve the utilization efficiency of the latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system, but their relatively low thermal conductivity results in an undesirable thermal response rate. The use of metal foam (MF) as an effective strategy to enhance the heat transfer performance of PCMs has gained attention. However, there is still a lack of discussion on the limitations and situations of known technologies. In this review, a total of 476 literature since 2000 are analyzed using scientometric analysis to highlight the key areas and new trends. The factors influencing the heat transfer performance of PCMs embedded with MF (PCMs/MF) are presented in-depth, and the developments of hybrid heat transfer enhancement techniques based on MF are comprehensively overviewed. Furthermore, the systematic information on PCMs/MF in typical applications is summarized, and the suitability of these technologies is discussed. Challenges and opportunities for further research work on PCMs/MF are also identified and discussed.
