The extinction time under mutational meltdown driven by high mutation rates

Lucy Lansch-Justen et al.

Summary: Mutational meltdown is an eco-evolutionary process where the accumulation of deleterious mutations leads to the decline and extinction of a population. This concept has potential applications in medical treatment of RNA virus infections. The research shows that the deleterious mutation rate has the strongest effect on extinction time, and intermediate-sized deleterious selection coefficients minimize extinction time. Additionally, simulations demonstrate that the variation in extinction time is surprisingly small given a set of parameters.

A branching process model of evolutionary rescue

Ricardo B. R. Azevedo et al.

Summary: Evolutionary rescue refers to the process in which a declining population may start growing again by increasing the frequency of fitter genotypes, thus avoiding extinction. This study presents a model to analyze the probability of rescue, the population growth curve of a rescued population, and the time until the first rescuing mutation occurs, under conditions of small mutation rate and selective advantage.
