Diversity of diurnal raptors in a suburban area of a city in southern Chile

Andres Munoz-Pedreros et al.

Summary: Raptor conservation programs need to consider the ecology of these birds in both natural and urban habitats, including suburban zones in regional planning initiatives. This study aimed to determine the use of diurnal raptors in a suburban area in southern Chile by characterizing different environmental zones and assessing their raptor diversity. Acoustic surveys and observations were conducted, resulting in 664 sightings of ten species of diurnal raptors. The study found that dense forest and grassland were the richest environments for raptors, and the spatial location of sites was important for conservation planning.

What makes an urban raptor?

Lucas M. Leveau et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the phylogenetic signal and drivers of raptor presence in urban areas using citizen science data from Argentina. The results indicate that closely related species are more likely to have similar tolerances to urbanization. Additionally, urbanization affects raptor occurrence, but is unrelated to traits such as body mass, diet, nesting site, and migratory behavior. Citizen science projects play an important role in collecting data at large geographical scales.
