Apolipoprotein E Genotype Moderation of the Association Between Physical Activity and Brain Health. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Andrew M. Pearce et al.

Summary: The possession of the e4 allele of the APOE gene is associated with cognitive decline and dementia risk. Physical activity seems to benefit carriers of the e4 allele differently, particularly in brain activation. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Lifestyle Affects Amyloid Burden and Cognition Differently in Men and Women

Dario Bachmann et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between lifestyle factors and Alzheimer's pathology and cognition. The findings suggest that higher cognitive activity is associated with better cognitive performance, while higher physical activity is associated with lower amyloid burden. The effects of these factors were found to be modified by sex, with different pathways in men and women.

Effect of aerobic exercise on amyloid accumulation in preclinical Alzheimer's: A 1-year randomized controlled trial

Eric D. Vidoni et al.

Summary: The study investigated the role of aerobic exercise in protecting brain health in older adults, finding that while it improved cardiorespiratory fitness, it did not significantly affect amyloid accumulation, brain volume, or cognitive performance.

Physical activity is associated with lower cerebral beta-amyloid and cognitive function benefits from lifetime experience-a study in exceptional aging

Valerie Treyer et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between cognition, personality, quality of life, and dementia-related factors in exceptional agers. The findings suggest that high amyloid load may subtly influence personality and quality of life, while high physical activity and engagement in extracurricular activities are associated with lower amyloid deposition and better executive functioning.

Influence of Physical Activity Levels and Functional Capacity on Brain β-Amyloid Deposition in Older Women

Raquel Pedrero-Chamizo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between physical activity levels, functional capacity, and cerebral beta-amyloid burden in older women, with a particular focus on the APOE-epsilon 4 genotype. While higher physical activity levels were not found to be associated with a reduction in A beta depositions, lower performance in functional capacity tests was linked to higher A beta accumulations in APOE-epsilon 4+ individuals. This suggests that maintaining good functional capacity may have a protective effect against Alzheimer's disease, especially in those with the APOE-epsilon 4 genetic risk factor.

Fifteen Years of the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) Study: Progress and Observations from 2,359 Older Adults Spanning the Spectrum from Cognitive Normality to Alzheimer's Disease

Christopher Fowler et al.

Summary: The AIBL study, which started in 2006, includes both Inception and Enrichment cohorts totaling over 8,500 person-years of investigation. It has contributed significantly to the understanding of Alzheimer's disease, providing valuable data for the development of interventions to delay, prevent, or treat the disease.
