Elastic Interfacial Layer Enabled the High-Temperature Performance of Lithium-Ion Batteries via Utilization of Synthetic Fluorosulfate Additive

Hyeongyu Moon et al.

Summary: The key to producing high-energy Li-ion cells is to ensure the stability of the interfaces between Si-containing anodes and Ni-rich cathodes. A multi-functional electrolyte additive, 4-(allyloxy)phenyl fluorosulfate (APFS), is used to create a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and a stable cathode-electrolyte interface. The combination of vinylene carbonate (VC) and APFS allows for high capacity and capacity retention in full cells.

Perfluoro Macrocyclic Ether as an Ambifunctional Additive for High-Performance SiO and Nickel 88%-Based High-Energy Li-ion Battery

Min-Geun Oh et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new fluorinated additive, icosafluoro-15-crown 5-ether, which effectively reduces the swelling issue of the silicon anode in lithium-ion batteries, improves stability, and significantly reduces manufacturing cost. The additive also stabilizes the nickel-rich oxide cathode in high-capacity cells. When used together with a decreased fraction of FEC, reversible cycling for 300 cycles at high voltage and high rate was achieved. Material characterization results reveal that the stabilization is derived from the passivation of both anode and cathode surfaces.

Zhongqin Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel cyano-siloxane additive, namely TDSTCN, was synthesized by introducing cyano-groups innovatively into a siloxane. By adding 0.5 wt.% TDSTCN, the cycle life of high nickel LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2/graphite full cells was dramatically increased, especially at a high temperature of 50℃ and a high charging cut-off voltage of 4.5V. The results indicate that the TDSTCN additive can scavenge HF and promote the formation of stable interface layers on the cathode and anode, enhancing the electrochemical performances of high nickel LIBs.

Effects of Lithium Bis(oxalate)borate Electrolyte Additive on the Formation of a Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Amorphous Carbon Electrodes by Operando Time-Slicing Neutron Reflectometry

Hiroyuki Kawaura et al.

Summary: Comprehensive analyses using neutron reflectivity and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were performed to understand the structure and composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer during charge-discharge processes and the effects of adding lithium bis(oxalate)-borate (LiBOB) on battery performance. The study revealed that Li2C2O4 was initially produced but later decomposed to Li2CO3 on the first charge cycle. The SEI layer formed by the decomposition of LiBOB remained chemically stable during further charge-discharge processes, resulting in reduced Li+ transfer resistance and increased charging capacity.

Summary: Researchers have extended the lifespan of anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) by introducing lithium oxalate as an electrode additive in the cathode. AFLMBs with a composite cathode containing 20% lithium oxalate and LiNi0.3Co0.3Mn0.3O2 exhibited >80% and 40% capacity retention after 50 and 100 cycles, respectively, outperforming AFLMBs using a pure LiNi0.3Co0.3Mn0.3O2 cathode. Surprisingly, the Coulombic efficiency of AFLMBs improved with an increased amount of lithium oxalate in the composite cathode.

Influence of Oxygen Content on the Structural Evolution of SiOx Thin-Film Electrodes with Subsequent Lithiation/Delithiation Cycles

Jung Hwi Cho et al.

Summary: SiOx negative electrodes for Li-ion batteries offer high energy density and better structural integrity compared to pure Si electrodes. This study investigates the near-surface structural evolution in SiOx thin films with different compositions and reveals that all the films undergo significant chemical changes during cycling, even those with high oxygen content. The results suggest that the near-surface regions of SiOx materials become part of the solid electrolyte interphase and tuning the surface oxygen content can be used to control its performance. The observed structural changes in SiOx may guide the design of passivating layers for improved cycle efficiency.
