Designed metal-organic frameworks with potential for multi-component hydrocarbon separation

Luyao Wang et al.

Summary: Petrochemical-related gases, especially light hydrocarbons with 1-8 carbon atoms, are essential industrial feedstocks. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are porous sorbents with designable structures, have shown potential in molecular recognition and gas separation. However, the use of MOFs for multi-component separation in the hydrocarbon industry has been less explored, and this review provides a comprehensive summary of the progress in this area.

Scalable Green Synthesis of Robust Ultra-Microporous Hofmann Clathrate Material with Record C3H6 Storage Density for Efficient C3H6/C3H8 Separation

Di Liu et al.

Summary: We report a robust Hofmann clathrate material (ZJU-75a) with high-density strong binding sites, which achieves excellent separation performance, high stability, and easy scalability of synthesis. ZJU-75a adsorbs a large amount of C3H6 with a record high storage density of 0.818 g mL(-1), and simultaneous exhibits high C3H6/C3H8 selectivity (54.2) at 296 K and 1 bar. This material is highly stable and can be easily produced at kilogram-scale using a green synthesis method, making it a benchmark material for addressing major challenges in industrial C3H6/C3H8 separation.

Engineering Supramolecular Binding Sites in a Chemically Stable Metal-Organic Framework for Simultaneous High C2H2 Storage and Separation

Kai Shao et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy by engineering supramolecular binding sites into MOFs to achieve high C2H2 storage and selectivity, overcoming the trade-off in C2H2/CO2 separation. The developed MOF (ZJU-50a) exhibits one of the highest C2H2 storage capacities and selectivities, providing a promising solution for C2H2 recovery with high purity.

Pore Distortion in a Metal-Organic Framework for Regulated Separation of Propane and Propylene

Liang Yu et al.

Summary: Regulated separation of propylene and propane was achieved in a metal-organic framework by designed pore distortion, demonstrating high selectivity and large capacity. In situ neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering provided insights into the binding domains of adsorbed propylene molecules and host-guest interaction dynamics in HIAM-301. This study sets a new benchmark for the adsorptive separation of propylene and propane.
