What We Know and Need to Know about Literacy Interventions for Elementary Students with Reading Difficulties and Disabilities, including Dyslexia

Stephanie Al Otaiba et al.

Summary: The purpose of this paper is to discuss and explore the effectiveness of various literacy interventions in improving reading skills for children who struggle with reading difficulties. The review of 14 meta-analyses and systematic reviews reveals that explicit and systematic interventions focusing on the code and meaning dimensions of reading and writing, delivered one-to-one or in small groups, are likely to improve foundational code-based reading skills. Additionally, findings suggest that standardized protocols, multiple components, and longer intervention duration can yield stronger effects, especially in upper elementary grades. Integration of reading and writing interventions also holds promise. However, more research is needed to understand specific instructional routines and components that provide more robust effects on students' ability to comprehend and individual differences in response to interventions.

Have You Heard of Developmental Language Disorder? An Online Survey

Jae-Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: Developmental language disorder (DLD) has low awareness and knowledge compared to other neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia, especially in Australia. The former label for DLD, specific language impairment (SLI), has an even lower level of awareness. More targeted approaches are needed to increase public awareness and knowledge of DLD.

The Multidimensional Impacts of Inequities for Tangata Whaikaha Maori (Indigenous Maori with Lived Experience of Disability) in Aotearoa, New Zealand

Tristram Richard Ingham et al.

Summary: This paper explores the multidimensional impacts of inequities on Indigenous Maori with lived experience of disability in New Zealand. Through in-depth interviews and data analysis, the results reveal that these individuals face inequitable access to determinants of health and well-being, health and disability care, as well as differential quality of care. The data also highlights the intersectional discrimination of racism, ableism, and disablism experienced by the Maori community. The recommendations emphasize the inclusion of Maori individuals in decision-making processes and the need for equal partnership rights in the design of health and disability systems and services.
