The complexities of diagnosis: New Zealand parents' knowledge, perceptions, and experiences of identification of their children's language and literacy difficulties

What We Know and Need to Know about Literacy Interventions for Elementary Students with Reading Difficulties and Disabilities, including Dyslexia

Summary: The purpose of this paper is to discuss and explore the effectiveness of various literacy interventions in improving reading skills for children who struggle with reading difficulties. The review of 14 meta-analyses and systematic reviews reveals that explicit and systematic interventions focusing on the code and meaning dimensions of reading and writing, delivered one-to-one or in small groups, are likely to improve foundational code-based reading skills. Additionally, findings suggest that standardized protocols, multiple components, and longer intervention duration can yield stronger effects, especially in upper elementary grades. Integration of reading and writing interventions also holds promise. However, more research is needed to understand specific instructional routines and components that provide more robust effects on students' ability to comprehend and individual differences in response to interventions.
