Plant strategies to mine iron from alkaline substrates

Isabel Cristina Velez-Bermudez et al.

Summary: In concert with oxygen, soil alkalinity strongly restricts the availability of iron, an essential nutrient with a multitude of functions in living organisms. This versatile, reciprocal plant-microbiome interplay affects iron mobilization directly, but also collaterally by impacting growth, fitness, and health of the host.

Bio-fortification of Two Wheat Cultivars with Iron and Zinc Through Their Soil and Foliar Application in Salt-Factored Soil: Growth, Ionic, Physiological, and Biochemical Modifications

Tayyaba Naz et al.

Summary: Salinity is a major environmental constraint in arid and semi-arid regions, depleting soil fertility and reducing uptake of micronutrients. Wheat, being a staple for a large population, is often low in important minerals like iron and zinc. Limited research exists on fortifying wheat with iron and zinc under saline conditions. This study aimed to assess the responses of selected wheat cultivars to soil and foliar application of iron and zinc under salt stress. Results showed that salt stress significantly deteriorated plant growth and yield, but application of iron and zinc increased wheat plant growth under salt stress. Foliar application was more efficient than soil application, and the combined application gave the highest yield and micronutrient accumulation in shoot and grains. This highlights the effectiveness of combined soil and foliar application in ameliorating micronutrient deficiency in crops grown in salt-affected soils.

Iron nutrition in agriculture: From synthetic chelates to biochelates

Monica Yorlady Alzate Zuluaga et al.

Summary: Iron is an essential micronutrient for plant growth, but its bioavailability can be limited in calcareous soils, leading to iron deficiency in plants. Currently, iron fertilization is commonly used in agriculture to prevent or treat iron deficiency chlorosis. Fe-fertilizers based on synthetic ligands effectively maintain iron in the soil solution and increase its bioavailability for plant uptake. However, these complexes have limitations such as pH-dependent effectiveness and environmental persistence. Plant-derived protein hydrolysates have the potential to be used as biochelating ligands in innovative iron fertilizers. Experimental trials on horticultural crops have shown that Fe-biochelate is as efficient as traditional synthetic chelates, even under alkaline conditions. This finding suggests that Fe-biochelates could be promising alternatives for iron nutrition management in crops.

Iron deficiency in soybean

Ryan Merry et al.

Summary: This review investigates the research achievements in the areas of phenotyping, genetics, and physiology of iron deficiency in soybean. It reveals connections between these areas and facilitates further discoveries. These studies are crucial for our understanding of iron deficiency physiology and bridging the gap between iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) resistance and plant responses to iron stress.

Improving nutrition through biofortification-A systematic review

Kelvin F. F. Ofori et al.

Summary: Nutritious foods are crucial for human health and development, but malnutrition and hidden hunger still pose challenges globally. Developing countries struggle with access to adequate and nutritious food, while developed countries face deficiencies in iron and zinc. Hidden hunger has had devastating effects on health and has led many countries to implement interventions such as dietary diversification and food supplementation. However, fortification, particularly through biofortification, is considered the most sustainable solution. Plant-based foods play a significant role, and agronomic biofortification, plant breeding, and transgenic approaches are being used to enhance nutrient content in crops.

Effects of foliar application of organic acids on strawberry plants

Teresa Saavedra et al.

Summary: The economic costs and environmental impacts of iron-chelate treatments have led researchers to explore alternative methods for controlling iron deficiency chlorosis. This study examined the effects of applying malic acid, citric acid, and succinic acid to strawberry plants and found that succinic acid improved chlorophyll levels and altered the overall nutritional balance in the plants.

Assessment of early physiological and biochemical responses in chia (Salvia hispanica L.) sprouts under salt stress

Mahmoud E. Younis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the early physiological and biochemical impacts of different concentrations of NaCl on chia sprouts after germination in stressful conditions for 7 days. The results showed that most germination parameters declined linearly with increasing NaCl concentrations, while stress tolerance attributes, total carbohydrate content, proline, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant levels increased. Chia sprouts were found to be sensitive to salt stress concentrations above 10 mM NaCl.
