Psychotic depression and deaths due to suicide

Tapio Paljarvi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish the risk of suicide associated with incident psychotic depression (PD) compared to incident non-psychotic severe depression (NPD). The results showed that PD was associated with a twofold increased risk of suicide compared to NPD, with the highest relative risks for impact-related and suffocation-related suicides. This study revealed some characteristics of PD patients in terms of the severity of suicidal ideation and choice of self-harm methods.

Correlates of suicidality in young people with depressive disorders: A systematic review

Summary: This review integrated findings from 71 studies on young people diagnosed with depressive disorders, identifying 26 correlates of suicidality. Depression characteristics, psychiatric comorbidity, and neurological characteristics were found to be the most associated with suicidal outcomes. However, heterogeneity across studies and incomplete reporting hindered meaningful quantitative synthesis.

Translating Interventional Neuroscience to Suicide: It's About Time

Summary: Despite advancements in psychiatric and psychological treatments, suicide rates continue to rise. One reason for this could be the lack of integration between neurocircuitry models and contemporary suicide theories. Another challenge is the variable nature of suicide risk over time, which requires closer attention in intervention studies. Future research should focus on real-time tracking and biologically based interventions to develop more effective strategies for suicide reduction.
