A comprehensive approach to chitosan-gelatine edible coating with β-cyclodextrin/lemongrass essential oil inclusion complex - Characterization and food application

Tamara Erceg et al.

Summary: Biopolymer-based films provide an eco-friendly approach for incorporating antimicrobial agents into food packaging, and the use of chitosan-gelatine active coating with lemongrass oil shows promise. In this study, beta-cyclodextrin was used to encapsulate lemongrass oil instead of surfactants for compatibilization. The antimicrobial effect of the coating was found to be effective for 20 days of cold storage, as assessed by predictive kinetic models and digital imaging.

In situ kinetics and flocs conformation studies of kaolinite flocculated by Chi-g-CPAM

Ruijing Xu et al.

Summary: This study compared the flocculation behavior of kaolinite induced by Chi-g-CPAM and CPAM. The flocculation kinetics and morphology changes were characterized. Chi-g-CPAM showed a shorter equilibrium time and a larger total mass of kaolinite layer compared to CPAM. Chi-g-CPAM followed a pseudo-first-order model while CPAM had a more complex kinetics. The study provides insights into flocculation behavior and contributes to the development of efficient flocculants in mineral processing and tailings treatment.

Application of chitosan with different molecular weights in cartilage tissue engineering

Runjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Cartilage tissue engineering aims to develop novel implantable materials for cartilage replacement to overcome the limitations of current treatments. Chitosan, with its similar structure to glycine aminoglycan, has been widely used in this field. The molecular weight of chitosan is an important parameter that affects both the preparation method of chitosan composite scaffolds and the healing effect on cartilage tissue. This review summarizes the application of different molecular weights of chitosan in cartilage repair, providing methods for preparing chitosan composite scaffolds with low, medium, and high molecular weights as well as an appropriate range for cartilage tissue repair.

Garima Agrawal et al.

Summary: In this study, redox-sensitive DH-ChSt MGs were developed for controlled release of insecticide and capturing heavy metal ions. The DH-ChSt MGs exhibited high loading and encapsulation efficiency for imi-dacloprid insecticide, and prolonged release under reducing conditions. DH-ChSt MGs also showed enhanced foliar adhesion and efficient binding of Fe3+. MTT assay confirmed the non-toxicity of DH-ChSt MGs, and their capability to bind heavy metal ions makes them a promising platform for agriculture application.

Molecular simulations of the effects of substitutions on the dissolution properties of amorphous cellulose acetate

Ying-Xian Shi et al.

Summary: The dissolution behavior of cellulose acetate (CA) is a critical property for its wide range of applications and derivative preparations. This study proposes a molecular model building strategy to investigate the dissolution behavior and structural properties of CA using molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory. The findings suggest that an increase in substituents reduces the cohesive energy and polarity of CA, thereby enhancing its solubility. The interaction of solvent molecules and the diffusion coefficient also play a synergistic role in CA dissolution.

Research on dissolution behavior of N-hydroxyphthalimide in three binary solvents: Measurement, modeling, molecular simulation and thermodynamics

Yameng Wan et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the solubility, thermodynamic parameters, and molecular interactions of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) in three binary solvents (2-methoxyethanol, N,N-dimethylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) + water. The experimental results show that the solubility of NHPI increases with temperature and the mass fraction of positive solvents in the binary solvents. Molecular electrostatic potential surface, solvation free energy, and radial distribution function analyses suggest that solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions play important roles in the solubility behavior. Three solubility models, including the Wilson model, kh equation, and modified Apelblat equation, provide acceptable results. Thermodynamic parameters, such as enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy, are also discussed. The dissolution process is found to be endothermic and entropy-driven.

Investigations on the reverse flotation of quartz from hematite using carboxymethyl chitosan as a depressant

Hongyang Wang et al.

Summary: Depressant carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) was introduced to reverse flotation of quartz from hematite using collector DDA. The reagent scheme of DDA/CMCS could achieve efficient separation of quartz from hematite, with CMCS showing better selective depression ability than starch. Zeta potential measurements illustrated that CMCS could prevent DDA adsorption onto the hematite surface, while it did not affect the interaction between DDA and quartz surface.
