Engagement in leisure activities and depression in older adults in the United States: Longitudinal evidence from the Health and Retirement Study

High-Frequency Hearing Loss Is Associated With Anxiety and Brain Structural Plasticity in Older Adults

Summary: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a common condition in older adults, characterized by symmetrical and slow sensorineural hearing loss that starts from the high-frequency region and spreads towards the low-frequency region with age. Previous studies have linked ARHL to anxiety, suggesting a possible involvement of brain structure in compensatory plasticity after partial hearing deprivation. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the interactions among high-frequency hearing loss, anxiety, and brain structure in older adults. The results revealed a decrease in gray matter volume (GMV) in 20 brain regions in ARHL patients compared to normal hearing controls, with a positive correlation between high-frequency pure tone audiometry (H-PT) and anxiety scores in the ARHL group. Specifically, the middle cingulate cortex (MCC) and hippocampal/parahippocampal (H-P) regions were associated with H-PT and anxiety scores in all participants. However, there was no relationship between depressive symptoms and hearing assessment or GMVs. These findings highlight the crucial role of MCC and H-P in the link between anxiety and hearing loss in older adults.

Are there gender differences in the trajectories of self-rated health among chinese older adults? an analysis of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS)
