Engagement in leisure activities and depression in older adults in the United States: Longitudinal evidence from the Health and Retirement Study

Jessica K. Bone et al.

Summary: Engaging in certain leisure activities, such as hobbies/projects and club participation, is associated with reduced odds of depression. Regular involvement in baking/cooking, hobbies, and clubs is linked to lower depression risk. However, activities like writing, reading, sewing, and attending non-religious organizations do not consistently show a correlation with depression.

High-Frequency Hearing Loss Is Associated With Anxiety and Brain Structural Plasticity in Older Adults

Wen Ma et al.

Summary: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a common condition in older adults, characterized by symmetrical and slow sensorineural hearing loss that starts from the high-frequency region and spreads towards the low-frequency region with age. Previous studies have linked ARHL to anxiety, suggesting a possible involvement of brain structure in compensatory plasticity after partial hearing deprivation. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the interactions among high-frequency hearing loss, anxiety, and brain structure in older adults. The results revealed a decrease in gray matter volume (GMV) in 20 brain regions in ARHL patients compared to normal hearing controls, with a positive correlation between high-frequency pure tone audiometry (H-PT) and anxiety scores in the ARHL group. Specifically, the middle cingulate cortex (MCC) and hippocampal/parahippocampal (H-P) regions were associated with H-PT and anxiety scores in all participants. However, there was no relationship between depressive symptoms and hearing assessment or GMVs. These findings highlight the crucial role of MCC and H-P in the link between anxiety and hearing loss in older adults.

Are there gender differences in the trajectories of self-rated health among chinese older adults? an analysis of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS)

Shichen Cui et al.

Summary: The study found that both males and females in China perceive their SRH as decreasing over time, with female SRH being lower than male SRH on average. However, after using the pattern-mixture model, no gender differences were found in the trajectories of SRH at baseline as well as in the rate of decline among the total sample of Chinese older adults. Males and females respond to SRH predictors similarly, except for current drinking habits having a more pronounced positive effect on males and healthcare accessibility having a more pronounced positive effect on females.

Analysis of Hearing Loss and Physical Activity Among US Adults Aged 60-69 Years

Pei-Lun Kuo et al.

Summary: The study highlights the association between hearing loss and physical activity in older adults, indicating a need to promote physical activity among individuals with hearing loss. Further research is necessary to explore whether interventions targeting hearing loss could lead to improvements in physical activity levels.

Prevalence of depressive disorders and treatment in China: a cross-sectional epidemiological study

Jin Lu et al.

Summary: Depressive disorders in China are more prevalent in women, unemployed individuals, and those who are separated, widowed, or divorced. The majority of individuals with depressive disorders reported social impairment, while treatment rates were very low and few people received adequate treatment. National programs are needed to improve the availability, accessibility, and acceptability of care for depression in China.
