Development of a low-density SNP genotyping panel by a novel technology mGPS and its application in germplasm identification of abalone

Weihong Lin et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated an SNP genotyping tool using genomic resequencing and Genotyping by Pinpoint Sequencing of multiplex PCR products (mGPS). Five abalone groups were identified, and genetic distances between them were analyzed. The results showed close genetic relationships between certain abalone groups, and core SNP markers were identified for future authentication and conservation of abalone resources.

Optimal Dietary Protein Requirement of Subadult Australian Hybrid Abalone (Haliotis rubra x Haliotis laevigata) at Different Rearing Temperatures

Abdul Lathiff Inamul Hassan et al.

Summary: Australian abalone aquaculture is characterized by a prolonged culture period and slow and variable growth. Water temperature is a crucial factor influencing abalone's physiology and energetics, leading to changes in their nutritional requirements. Feeds are generally formulated based on the nutritional requirements at the optimal temperature, but there is a need to optimize dietary protein levels to match temperature-specific requirements during extreme conditions.

Study of hybrid and backcross abalone populations uncovers trait separation and their thermal resistance capacity

Qizhen Xiao et al.

Summary: Hybridization and backcrossing are effective breeding methods for improving genetic characteristics, with hybrid abalone showing the best thermal resistance. The number of backcrosses and the presence of black spots in the visceral mass are also related to growth and thermal resistance in backcross abalone.

Assembly of yield heterosis of an elite rice hybrid is promising by manipulating dominant quantitative trait loci

Guojing Shen et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved heterosis in an elite rice hybrid by manipulating major quantitative trait loci. The results suggest that dominance underlying functional complementation is an important contributor to yield heterosis and that manipulating several major dominant heterotic loci can successfully achieve heterosis assembly.

Three-way cross hybrid abalone exhibit heterosis in growth performance, thermal tolerance, and hypoxia tolerance

Qizhen Xiao et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic comparative assessment of heterosis for survival, growth, thermal tolerance, and hypoxia tolerance in different abalone species and found positive mid-parent heterosis in three-way cross hybrids, SS × DF and DF × SS, indicating improved commercial traits in these hybrids through a combination of selection and further hybridization.

Growth Performance and Transcriptomic Response of Warm-Acclimated Hybrid AbaloneHaliotis rufescens(♀) xH. corrugata(♂)

M. A. Tripp-Valdez et al.

Summary: Abalone farming along the Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico is primarily based on red abalone, but increasing frequency of extreme temperature events is impacting this activity. Interspecific hybridization, such as between red and pink abalone, may improve abalone culture by increasing thermal tolerance and growth rates. Hybrid progeny showed better performance in terms of growth and survival at higher temperatures compared to pure red abalone, which was supported by findings in transcriptional profiling.

The dominance model for heterosis explains culm length genetics in a hybrid sorghum variety

Shumpei Hashimoto et al.

Summary: Heterosis in high-biomass sorghum F-1 hybrids is explained by the dominance model and a combination of genes which balance the shortness and early flowering of the parents. Five QTLs for culm length were identified and explained using the dominance model. Combining classic dw1 or dw3 with new gene dw7a is found to be an important breeding strategy.
