A Microscopic Heterogeneous Traffic Flow Model Considering Distance Headway

Faryal Ali et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new microscopic heterogeneous traffic flow model to improve the performance of the intelligent driver (ID) model. The model uses forward and lateral distance headways to characterize traffic behavior and is shown to be more stable than the ID model over a 1000 m circular road. Experimental results on an 1800 m circular road also demonstrate that the proposed model, based on lateral distance headway, can realistically simulate traffic evolution.

Heterogeneous lattice hydrodynamic model and jamming transition mixed with connected vehicles and human-driven vehicles

Cong Zhai et al.

Summary: With the development of communication and perception technologies, connected vehicles (CVs) are advancing rapidly. In the process of promoting CVs, there will be a coexistence of CVs and human-driven vehicles (HDVs) on the road network. Previous studies have not quantified the differences between mixed vehicular flow, assuming homogeneous road vehicles. Therefore, a heterogeneous lattice hydrodynamics model is proposed to consider the differences between CAVs and CVs in information acquisition. The model's linear stability and nonlinear phenomena are analyzed, and numerical simulations are conducted to test the impact of CVs' penetration rate and bi-directional visual field on traffic flow stability.

Modeling the heterogeneous traffic flow considering the effect of self-stabilizing and autonomous vehicles

Yuan Gong et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a car-following model for autonomous vehicles and heterogeneous traffic flow, considering the self-stabilizing effect. The model's stability is analyzed through linear and nonlinear methods, and numerical simulation is used to verify the results. The study finds that the self-stabilizing effect can enhance the stability of heterogeneous traffic flow and alleviate traffic congestion. Moreover, increasing the self-stabilizing coefficient and historical time length improves the stability of the traffic flow.

Cooperative car-following control with electronic throttle and perceived headway errors on gyroidal roads

Cong Zhai et al.

Summary: This study presents a vehicle-to-vehicle communication based feedback control method for efficient and safe vehicular motion on gyroidal roads. A modified car-following model considering perceived headway errors is proposed, and the impact of error coefficient, slope information, and perception time on the model's robustness is verified. A cooperative control signal is designed for unstable conditions, and numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller in alleviating traffic congestion and improving road traffic efficiency.

Stability Analysis of Heterogeneous Traffic Flow with Connected and Automated Vehicles: Joint Consideration of Communication Failures and Driver Takeover

Xuedong Hua et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the stability of heterogeneous traffic flow with communication failures. By modeling two types of communication failures (bogus messages and transmission delay) and introducing drivers' takeovers to react to these failures, the research found that heterogeneous traffic flow consists of CACC vehicles, CACC vehicles with communication failures, and HDVs. Numerical analyses were conducted to validate the theoretical models and demonstrate their major properties. Furthermore, a discussion on traffic capacity was presented to analyze the overall impact of communication failures on traffic flow characteristics.

Modeling and stability analysis of cyberattack effects on heterogeneous intelligent traffic flow

Rongjun Cheng et al.

Summary: The platooning of connected automated vehicles (CAVs) will significantly impact the future market. However, the open-access environment also exposes cooperative vehicle platoons to cyberattacks. Additionally, heterogeneous traffic composed of different vehicles and car-following combinations can affect the overall stability of traffic flow dynamics. Therefore, it is crucial to consider cyberattacks and heterogeneous vehicles to enhance traffic stability and safety.

Linear stability analysis of heterogeneous traffic flow considering degradations of connected automated vehicles and reaction time

Zhihong Yao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of CAV degradations and reaction time diversity on the linear stability of heterogeneous traffic flow composed of CAVs and HDVs. The results indicate that a high penetration rate of CAVs and short reaction time can improve the linear stability of traffic flow, while CAV degradations have a negative effect on stability.

Summary: This paper investigates how to stabilize traffic flow in complex road environments such as mountainous areas and freeways through a cooperative control method, proposing a new self-delayed feedback controller. The sufficient condition where traffic jams do not occur is derived from the perspective of the frequency domain via Hurwitz criteria and H-infinity norm of transfer functions.

Stability of heterogeneous traffic considering impacts of platoon management with multiple time delays

Tiancheng Ruan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the traffic composition and distribution characteristics of heterogeneous traffic flow, as well as the impact of platoon management and time delays on its linear stability. The results show that the stability of heterogeneous traffic flow deteriorates due to the involvement of CAV, and does not improve until a certain threshold of CAV market penetration rate is reached. Platoon management can enhance the linear stability of heterogeneous traffic flow at high CAV market penetration rates, while time delays have a negative effect on the linear stability.

Macroscopic Traffic-Flow Modelling Based on Gap-Filling Behavior of Heterogeneous Traffic

Muhammad Umair Khan et al.

Summary: This study explains the gap-filling behavior in heterogeneous traffic flow using the effusion model of gas particles, proposing a new model that outperforms the PW model. The main difference lies in how the new model propagates the effect of traffic density bottleneck backward in the form of a shockwave, which the PW model does not exhibit.

On the fundamental diagram and driving behavior modeling of heterogeneous traffic flow using UAV-based data

Afzal Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study develops fundamental traffic flow diagrams for the heterogeneous and undisciplined traffic stream for the first time, utilizing traffic videos captured using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in Karachi, Pakistan. The stochastic fundamental diagrams (FDs) are developed to represent the entire range of speed-density data and determine the 85th percentile speeds for implementing speed limits on major urban arterials. The study shows a significant difference in the behavior of different modes in the traffic stream, highlighting the need for policy measures to enforce discipline and the utilization of a UAV-based geospatial analysis technique for accurate extraction of longitudinal and lateral distances between vehicles.
