Multi-functional of TiO2@Ag core-shell nanostructure to prevent hydrogen sulfide formation during anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge with boosting of bio-CH4 production

Gamal K. Hassan et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel supplement, TiO2@Ag core-shell nanostructure, was reported to effectively remove hydrogen sulfide gas and enhance bio-methane production in the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. The prepared core-shell nanostructure was characterized using various techniques, and the results demonstrated its superior performance in hydrogen sulfide removal and bio-methane production compared to its components.

Insight into the microbial and genetic response of anammox biomass to broad range concentrations of different antibiotics: Linking performance and mechanism

Filip Gamon et al.

Summary: Antibiotics have become emerging pollutants in wastewater, and their presence affects the activity of microorganisms involved in wastewater treatment. This study investigates the long-term effects of three commonly recognized antibiotics (OTC, CIP, and CLA) on the anammox process, focusing on treatment efficiency, resistance mechanisms, bacteria cell morphology, and activated sludge community structure. The results show that the anammox community can adapt to low concentrations of the antibiotics, but high concentrations significantly reduce nitrogen removal rates. This study is important for understanding the mechanisms of antibiotic pollution in wastewater during the anammox process and provides guidance for the stable operation of the anammox process in antibiotic-containing wastewater treatment.

Harnessing Cu@Fe3O4 core shell nanostructure for biogas production from sewage sludge: Experimental study and microbial community shift

Gamal K. Hassan et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel supplement called Cu@Fe3O4 core shell nanostructure (NS) that significantly increased biogas production during the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. The addition of Cu@Fe3O4 core-shell NS at a moderate concentration resulted in a three-fold increase in biogas production compared to using Fe3O4 nanoparticles alone. The microbial community composition also changed with the addition of Cu@Fe3O4 core-shell NS.

Boosting biohydrogen production from dairy wastewater via sludge immobilized beads incorporated with polyaniline nanoparticles

Mohamed S. Hellal et al.

Summary: In this study, the immobilization of anaerobic sludge in sodium alginate (SA) with polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles (NPs) was found to enhance the degradation of organic matter in dairy wastewater (DWW) and increase biohydrogen yield. The concentration of PANI NPs in SA directly affected the degradation in DWW and bio-hydrogen production.

Continuous co-generation of biohydrogen and biomethane through two-stage anaerobic digestion of hydrothermally pretreated food waste

Lingkan Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, mild hydrothermal pretreatment of raw food waste was used to improve the performance of subsequent anaerobic digestion, leading to successful bioenergy recovery from food waste. The pretreated food waste showed stable production in a two-stage system, while the raw food waste and one-stage system exhibited a decline in performance. Microbial community analysis revealed the mechanism behind the pretreatment, and the pretreated food waste had a significant advantage in reducing energy yield.

Elza R. Mikheeva et al.

Summary: This study focused on continuous production of biohydrogen from cheese whey, utilizing heat and acid pretreatments to optimize the process. The highest hydrogen yields and production rates were obtained with specific conditions such as hydraulic retention time and organic load rate. Firmicutes were dominant at the phylum level, while Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium were dominant at the genus level.

Dissolved organic matter byproducts from combined low-level alkaline and mechanical treatment of sludge: species, and their bioavailability

Qing Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of low-level alkalinity combined with ultrasonic or mechanical cutting in the sludge pretreatment process before anaerobic digestion. Results showed that the DOM components increased after low-level alkaline treatment and ultrasonication. The protein components were further degraded into free amino acids, with aspartate, glutamate, and arginine being the most commonly utilized FAAs by the BNR biomass.
