The effect of habitat and fishing-effort data resolution on the outcome of seabed status assessment in bottom trawl fisheries

Jan Geert Hiddink et al.

Summary: Mobile bottom fishing has a widespread and known impact on seabed habitats. Risk assessments can evaluate these impacts and inform decisions about sustainable fisheries certification. The resolution of input data layers, particularly for seabed habitats and fishing effort, affects the outcome of risk assessments of bottom trawling impacts. Fine and medium resolution habitat maps provide more detailed information and result in a larger range of seabed status, recovery times, and predicted habitat outcomes than coarse resolution maps.

Trawl impacts on the relative status of biotic communities of seabed sedimentary habitats in 24 regions worldwide

C. Roland Pitcher et al.

Summary: Bottom trawling is widely used and impacts seabed habitats. However, the risks from trawling have not been quantified in most regions. This research synthesized evidence from 24 regions worldwide and developed a quantitative indicator of biotic status for sedimentary habitats. The findings highlight the need for more effective management to reduce exploitation and improve stock sustainability and seabed environmental status. The study also found that the area swept by trawling is related to the seabed status, allowing for preliminary predictions of regional status based on the total amount of trawling.

A Dendrophyllia ramea Population in the Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea) Threatened by Anthropogenic Impacts

Michela Angiolillo et al.

Summary: This study is the first to quantitatively describe a population of Dendrophyllia ramea on the Apollo bank, which was discovered during a ROV survey in the Ionian Sea in summer 2021. The study assesses the habitat description, bathymetric distribution, population density, and structure of the species through image analysis. The findings reveal a well-developed population of D. ramea on boulders at a depth of 70-80 m, with varying densities and negative impacts from deepwater fishing activities.

Spatial assessment of benthic habitats vulnerability to bottom fishing in a Mediterranean seamount

A. De la Torriente Diez et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of fishing activities on benthic communities, finding varying degrees of disturbance to benthic habitats, with biogenic habitats showing greater sensitivity. Trawling and longlining were identified as the main fishing methods, with different habitats exhibiting varying levels of sensitivity to these activities.

Sentinels of Seabed (SoS) indicator: Assessing benthic habitats condition using typical and sensitive species

A. Serrano et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new indicator method "Sentinels of the Seabed (SoS)" to assess the status of benthic habitats using sensitive sentinel species. The results show that SoS is highly effective in assessing the habitats under both physical and chemical pressures, making it a potentially useful tool in the management of marine ecosystems.

Quantifying habitat preference of bottom trawling gear

N. T. Hintzen et al.

Summary: Continental shelves are heavily impacted by bottom trawling, affecting a quarter of wild marine species. Understanding suitable fishing grounds for bottom trawlers is crucial in marine spatial planning discussions, and studying the habitat preference of fisheries is important for supporting fisheries and evaluating benthic impacts.

Tracking the effect of temperature in marine demersal fish communities

Antonio Punzon et al.

Summary: Most demersal species in the Northeast Atlantic are experiencing shifts in distribution due to global warming, leading to profound changes in demersal communities. The Community Weighted Mean Temperature (CWMT) index is used to link the thermal preference of demersal fish communities and temperature, showing potential to explore and anticipate climate change effects on demersal communities under different warming scenarios.

Summary: This study focuses on the distribution of two species of sponges, using geomorphological variables and oceanographic data to develop models, validating the use of low-resolution layers, and ultimately obtaining spatial distribution models for both sponges.
