Plant drought tolerance trait is the key parameter in improving the modeling of terrestrial transpiration in arid and semi-arid regions

Xintao Liu et al.

Summary: The modeling of terrestrial transpiration depends on accurate representation of plant functional traits, with drought tolerance, stomata, and photosynthesis being identified as the most critical traits. The importance of drought tolerance traits, particularly P-50, increases in lower precipitation regions, while the importance of stomatal and photosynthetic traits decreases in drier climates. Neglecting the variation in drought tolerance traits may lead to bias in transpiration modeling.

Quantifying and Reducing Uncertainty in Global Carbon Cycle Predictions: Lessons and Perspectives From 15 Years of Data Assimilation Studies With the ORCHIDEE Terrestrial Biosphere Model

N. MacBean et al.

Summary: This review presents the development of a carbon cycle data assimilation (DA) system for optimizing carbon cycle parameters in the ORCHIDEE TBM. The authors analyze the impact of assimilating different carbon cycle related datasets on CO2 fluxes and find that assimilating atmospheric CO2 data is crucial for improving predictions of the terrestrial land carbon sink.

Temporally corrected long-term satellite solar-induced fluorescence leads to improved estimation of global trends in vegetation photosynthesis during 1995-2018

Songhan Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a practical approach to correct the temporal inconsistency of different satellite SIF data and generate a continuously long-term consistent global SIF dataset. The results show that the corrected dataset can capture the temporal trends and inter-annual variations of GPP and has been validated against high-spatial resolution SIF data.

CARDAMOM-FluxVal version 1.0: a FLUXNET-based validation system for CARDAMOM carbon and water flux estimates

Yan Yang et al.

Summary: Uncertainty in land-atmosphere carbon and water exchanges in terrestrial biosphere models is a major challenge. The CARDAMOM framework has been successful in improving the accuracy of carbon and water flux predictions by assimilating observed data. In this study, a benchmarking framework for evaluating the performance of CARDAMOM in estimating carbon and water fluxes is developed using the FLUXNET 2015 dataset. Results show that CARDAMOM performs well in representing and predicting the variability of assimilated observations. This benchmarking system can facilitate model intercomparison and further development of CARDAMOM.

A physiology-based Earth observation model indicates stagnation in the global gross primary production during recent decades

Torbern Tagesson et al.

Summary: Earth observation-based estimates of global gross primary production (GPP) are crucial for understanding the terrestrial biosphere's response to climate change and other human impacts. This study used an asymptotic light response function (LRF) to estimate GPP, showing better results at high spatiotemporal resolutions compared to conventional methods. The global terrestrial GPP budget was stable around 121.8 +/- 3.5 Pg C annually from 1982 to 2015, with the strongest variability observed in semi-arid regions and croplands in China and India.

The three major axes of terrestrial ecosystem function

Mirco Migliavacca et al.

Summary: The leaf economics spectrum and the global spectrum of plant forms and functions revealed fundamental axes of variation in plant traits, representing different ecological strategies shaped by the evolutionary development of plant species. Ecosystem functions depend on environmental conditions and the traits of species within ecological communities. However, the axes of variation of ecosystem functions are largely unknown, limiting our understanding of ecosystem responses to anthropogenic drivers and environmental changes.

Summary: This study quantified the impacts of salt on soil water and heat transport in saline soils through field experiments and model calibration. The addition of a new module significantly improved the model's representation of soil freezing point depression and can be a useful tool for addressing salinization issues in mid-to-high latitudes.

Increasing impact of warm droughts on northern ecosystem productivity over recent decades

Summary: The authors demonstrate an increased negative extreme values of gross primary productivity in northern midlatitude ecosystems, particularly over grasslands and croplands, attributed to the impact of warm droughts. This highlights the vulnerability of terrestrial carbon sinks and food security to increasing extreme events.
