Thermal performance analysis of a new type of branch-fin enhanced battery thermal management PCM module

Furen Zhang et al.

Summary: In order to address the lightweight design issue of metal fins and enhance the heat transfer between phase change material and lithium batteries, this paper proposes 9 new branch fin design schemes and verifies the reliability of the computational fluid dynamics model through heat transfer experiments. The study finds that by increasing the fin coverage area and the number of transverse fins, the average cell temperature can be reduced and the heat transfer performance can be improved under a 5C discharge rate. Additionally, the inner arc fins have a more significant effect on reducing the cell temperature, while extending the arc length of transverse fins decreases the system's thermal performance.

Is electric battery propulsion for ships truly the lifecycle energy solution for marine environmental protection as a whole?

Byongug Jeong et al.

Summary: This paper aims to answer the question of whether electric battery powered ships can be a promising solution for future maritime environmental protection. Comparative analyses were conducted between diesel and battery-electric propulsions in Scotland coastal areas. The research findings show that the impact of battery application is not zero-emission from a lifecycle perspective. The environmental performances of the same vessels vary depending on the electricity production methods of different countries. Scaling up the case studies to international voyages yielded consistent results, highlighting the shortcomings of current maritime environmental assessment practices and policies promoting battery-powered ships.

A review of phase change heat transfer in shape-stabilized phase change materials (ss-PCMs) based on porous supports for thermal energy storage

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) using phase change materials (PCMs) is effective in addressing energy supply-demand mismatch, but faces challenges of low thermal conductivity and leakage. Integrating porous supports and PCMs to fabricate shape-stabilized phase change materials (ss-PCMs) is one solution, with research on phase change heat transfer in porous ss-PCMs being crucial for system performance evaluation. Research gaps exist between phase change heat transfer and material preparation, and future studies should focus on numerical advancements and experimental investigations in this area.

Structural design of a composite board/heat pipe based on the coupled electro-chemical-thermal model in battery thermal management system

Xianrong Jin et al.

Summary: The study on a three-dimensional battery thermal management system (BTMS) based on the electrochemical-thermal coupled model demonstrates that the system combining composite board and heat pipes is more effective in improving heat performances than a system with only a composite board. Additionally, a BTMS with a combination of vertical and horizontal pipes achieves a higher comprehensive cooling efficiency compared to a system with single pipes. The optimal arrays significantly enhance the performance of the traditional composite board thermal management system.
