MRI of Potassium and Sodium Enables Comprehensive Analysis of Ion Perturbations in Skeletal Muscle Tissue After Eccentric Exercise

Lena V. Gast et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in apparent tissue potassium concentration (aTPC) in calf muscle tissue after eccentric exercise and in delayed-onset muscle soreness using potassium (K-39) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and compared these changes to the corresponding changes in apparent tissue sodium concentration (aTSC) measured with sodium (Na-23) MRI. The results showed that eccentric exercise leads to muscle soreness and significantly increased sodium and potassium concentrations in the muscles.

Sodium and quantitative hydrogen parameter changes in muscle tissue after eccentric exercise and in delayed-onset muscle soreness assessed with magnetic resonance imaging

Svenja A. Hoger et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the changes in sodium and proton parameters in muscle tissue using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after eccentric exercise and in delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The results showed that sodium concentration and intracellular-weighted sodium signal increased significantly after exercise and decreased after 48 hours. These findings provide insights into the physiological processes of DOMS and muscle regeneration, which may help optimize training and reduce sports-related injuries.

Imaging of muscle injuries in sports medicine

Rafael Heiss et al.

Summary: Early diagnosis of muscle injuries is essential for effective treatment and healing. This review focuses on the use of ultrasound and MRI in imaging muscle injuries in sports medicine, as well as experimental approaches for diagnosis. Imaging plays a crucial role in confirming and assessing the extent of sports-related muscle injuries, influencing treatment decisions and prognosis.

Summary: Compared to 3T MR, visualization of anatomical structures at 7T showed significantly higher visibility of cartilage, trabecular bone, tendons, nerves, and ligaments. Image quality was also significantly superior at 7T, except for artefacts.

Muscle perfusion and the effect of compression garments in delayed-onset muscle soreness assessed with arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging

Christian R. Meixner et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate muscle perfusion in exercise-induced muscle soreness and assess the effect of compression garments. The findings suggest that there is an initial increase in muscle perfusion after exercise, but it normalizes within 6 and 48 hours. Wearing compression garments does not have a significant effect on muscle perfusion.

Exercise-induced muscle damage: multi-parametric MRI quantitative assessment

Xiaohong Lyu et al.

Summary: The study explored the value of magnetic resonance quantitative analysis in evaluating eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage, comparing different eccentric exercise modes in rats. Diffusion tensor imaging, T2 mapping, and intravoxel incoherent motion accurately reflected muscle damage and recovery. Continuous exercise resulted in the lowest muscle damage, while once-fatigue exercise had the highest, providing useful information for physical training programs.

SEPIA-Susceptibility mapping pipeline tool for phase images

Kwok-Shing Chan et al.

Summary: Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a computational technique with high sensitivity for quantifying iron deposition and distinguishing paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions. SEPIA is an open-source processing pipeline tool for MRI phase images and QSM, offering flexibility in processing and simplifying workflow for researchers. The extendable design of SEPIA allows developers to deploy their methods and provides a platform for sharing and utilizing state-of-the-art methods in QSM research.

Effect of compression garments on muscle perfusion in delayed-onset muscle soreness: A quantitative analysis using intravoxel incoherent motion MR perfusion imaging

Andreas Riexinger et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study evaluated the effect of compression garments on muscle perfusion during rest and after the induction of DOMS using MR perfusion imaging. The results showed that compression garments did not have a significant effect on muscle perfusion in both compressed and noncompressed legs during and after exhausting exercise inducing DOMS. However, microvascular perfusion in the gastrocnemius muscle significantly increased post-exercise, with no significant change in tissue perfusion 48 hours later.

Susceptibility-weighted Imaging: Technical Essentials and Clinical Neurologic Applications

Sven Haller et al.

Summary: Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) has evolved to improve the depiction of various findings in neuroimaging, including microbleeds, iron deposition, and abnormal vascular structures. It also helps identify features not visible on standard images, such as nigrosome 1 in Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Summary: MRI detection of blood and calcium in the musculoskeletal system is limited, but can be improved with SWI which has been successfully applied in the CNS. The potential application of SWI in different MSK clinical scenarios is promising, despite being less commonly used in this area compared to the CNS.
