A Cadaveric Study Using Computed Tomography for Measuring the Ocular Bulb and Scleral Skeleton of the Atlantic Puffin (Aves, Alcidae, Fratercula arctica)

Marcos Fumero-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Advanced imaging techniques, such as CT, are valuable in providing detailed information on the ocular structures of seabirds, which require specific adaptations for their diverse aquatic, terrestrial, and aerial environments. Understanding the ocular anatomy and biology of these animals is important for clinicians, biologists, and researchers. However, there is a lack of publications regarding the use of imaging diagnosis in avian ophthalmology. Our study focused on the morphometric analysis of the ocular bulb and its internal structures in puffins using advanced imaging techniques such as CT.

Micro-CT guided illustration of the head anatomy of penguins (Aves: Sphenisciformes: Spheniscidae)

Peter W. Hadden et al.

Summary: This study used traditional dissection and micro-CT to illustrate the skulls of different penguin species. Micro-CT proved to be a powerful tool for three-dimensional anatomic imaging, capturing accurate depictions of all bony elements in the head. Additionally, fixing, dehydrating, and diffusion staining techniques allowed for the identification of muscles and other large nonmineralized structures.

Computed tomographic and gross anatomy of the head of the blue-fronted Amazon parrot (Amazona aestiva)

Ana Carolina Lourenco Faillace et al.

Summary: The blue-fronted Amazon parrot is a popular pet bird in Brazil, and a study described the normal anatomy of its head, which can contribute to future comparative morphology studies and clinical practice. High-quality CT images are essential for identifying and detailing most head structures, and multiplanar reconstruction is a useful tool for complete visualization of the head. However, conventional CT images are not sufficient for visualizing the inner ear and related structures, as well as the paratympanic sinus.
