Effect of BN nanoparticle content in SiC matrix on microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC/SiC composites

Kazuya Shimoda et al.

Summary: BN-nanoparticle-containing SiC-matrix-based composites without a fiber/matrix interface were fabricated by SPS. The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated and the composites with a BN nanoparticle content of 50 vol.% showed quasiductile fracture behavior. The composites also exhibited high strength and bending, proportional limit stress, and ultimate tensile strength values under ambient conditions.

Novel production route for SiC/SiC ceramic-matrix composites using sandwich prepreg sheets

Kazuya Shimoda et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method of producing high-quality SiC/SiC ceramic-matrix composites. A SiC slurry with binders was used to impregnate SiC fibers and form green sheets without fibers, which were then sandwiched between two SiC green sheets and warm-pressed. The resulting composites exhibited excellent bending strength and tensile properties due to the controllable sheet thickness and smoother fiber bundles of the sandwich prepreg sheets.

Thermal stability of CVI and MI SiC/SiC composites with Hi-Nicalon™-S fibers

R. T. Bhatt et al.

Summary: The influence of high-temperature argon heat treatment on the microstructure and room-temperature in-plane tensile properties of 2D woven CVI and 2D unidirectional MI SiC/SiC composites with Hi-Nicalon(TM)-S SiC fibers was investigated. Both composites exhibited different degradation behaviors and mechanisms under the heat treatment conditions.

Effect of oxidation on the bending fatigue behavior of an advanced SiC/SiC CMC component at 1000 °C in air

Amit Patel et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the impact of oxidation on SiC/SiC CMC structured components under both static and fatigue loading. Damage in stress-concentrated regions was observed. The component is made of Tyranno SA3 fiber, BN interphase, and CVI+PIP hybrid matrix. Strength and fracture morphology were compared. Annealing resulted in slight oxidation and improved strength. Fatigued samples without annealing showed higher retained strength due to smooth debonding. Fatigued samples with annealing at high stress levels experienced a loss in strength due to significant borosilicate glass formation, causing brittle failure. However, simultaneous filling of borosilicate glasses into the pores helped maintain retained strength.
