Emergence of climate change in the tropical Pacific

Jun Ying et al.

Summary: Determining the emergent climate change signals in the tropical Pacific is crucial for climate action. Model simulations show that the mean sea surface temperature signal is already detectable, and that mean rainfall and ENSO-related signals could emerge around 2040. The results emphasize the importance of understanding the time of emergence of climate change signals and the increasing risks of ENSO-induced climate extremes.

Effects of oceanographic environment on the distribution and migration of Pacific saury (Cololabis saira) during main fishing season

Shigang Liu et al.

Summary: The distribution and fishing grounds of Pacific saury are significantly influenced by oceanographic factors, with sea surface temperature being the most important factor. The intrusion area of the Oyashio has a synchronous trend with the migration of Pacific saury to the Japanese coastal region. This study extends our understanding of the effects of oceanographic environment on Pacific saury.

Indian Ocean warming as key driver of long-term positive trend of Arctic Oscillation

Yong-Cheol Jeong et al.

Summary: The study found that the warming sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean plays an important role in the positive trend of AO, characterized by a poleward shift of zonal-mean zonal winds. The momentum flux convergence by stationary waves and the reduced upward propagating wave activity flux over the North Pacific due to Indian Ocean warming contribute to the strengthening of the polar vortex and the positive trend of AO. Future projections of AO should consider the warming trend in tropical ocean basins, including the Indian Ocean.

Size-specific spatiotemporal dynamics of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) caught by the longline fishery in the eastern Pacific Ocean

Keisuke Satoh et al.

Summary: This study revealed the size-specific spatiotemporal dynamics of bigeye tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean, showing spatial segregation by size and different distribution patterns for adult, intermediate size, and juvenile fish. The study also observed spatial restructuring by size in response to El Nino and La Nina events, highlighting the impact of oceanographic conditions on fish distribution and movement.

North Atlantic Oscillation and fisheries management during global climate change

Jose C. Baez et al.

Summary: The North Atlantic Oscillation is the most important large-scale climatic oscillation affecting the North Atlantic region, influencing meteorological parameters and the marine ecosystem. Its variability affects fisheries resources and yields, and can be further impacted by climate change altering the NAO pattern.

Decadal Shift in the Relationship between Winter Arctic Oscillation and Central Indian Ocean Precipitation during the Early 2000s

Yiwen Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that the relationship between the boreal winter Arctic Oscillation (AO) and tropical Indian Ocean climate experienced a decadal change in 2001/2002. Analysis showed that AO may modulate the Arabian anticyclone through two Rossby wave paths, leading to changes in spatial patterns and airflow correlations during 2002-2019.

Interannual variability of the frequency of MJO phases and its association with two types of ENSO

Panini Dasgupta et al.

Summary: This study reexamines the impact of two types of El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modes on the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity, identifying two dominant zonal patterns of MJO frequency that exhibit significant interannual variability. These patterns are related to the ENSO phases and demonstrate complex interactions between the ocean and atmosphere, leading to changes in moisture distribution across the tropics. The results highlight how the MJO activity is modulated regionally in the presence of different ENSO events, offering insights for anticipating seasonal MJO conditions based on predicted ENSO states.
