Impact of armed conflict on land use and land cover changes in global border areas

Summary: This study examines the linkages between armed conflicts and land use and land cover changes (LUCC) in borderlands. The findings show that nearly 50% of global armed conflicts since 1992 have occurred in borderlands, resulting in approximately 16.5% of global LUCC. The impact of armed conflicts on land use is delayed, with most changes occurring during the conflict period, and the rate of impervious surface changes is higher.

Spatiotemporal characteristics and the national variations of borderland use change in Laos within the geopolinomical context

Summary: Laos, the only landlocked country in Mainland Southeast Asia, has experienced significant land-use change (LUC) in its border areas due to geopolitical mechanisms with neighboring countries. Deforestation and expansion of construction land and cropland have been identified as the main factors contributing to LUC along the Laos border. The study also finds that border cooperation has led to decreased differences in LUC between Laos and its neighboring countries since 1985, with distinct bordering characteristics observed in cropland and construction land along the Laos-China and Laos-Thailand borders.

The impossible energy trinity: Energy security, sustainability, and sovereignty in cross-border electricity systems

Population boom in the borderlands globally

Summary: The population in borderlands has experienced significant growth and agglomeration, with over 1/6 of the global population located in these areas. The growth rate of population in these areas is higher than the global average. More than 70% of borderlands show population increases, mainly in developing countries. This study provides new insights into population growth in borderlands and calls for further research on sustainable development in these areas.

Impacts of linear transport infrastructure on terrestrial vertebrate species and conservation in China

Summary: Two strategic documents issued by the Chinese Central Government project that China's linear transport infrastructure (LTI) network will rank at the forefront of ecological and sustainable transport networks globally by the mid-21st century. This study summarizes existing research and proposes development directions and strategies for terrestrial vertebrate species protection around LTI in China. The research focused on the impact of roads and railways on wildlife, with mammals being the most studied taxa. Recommendations for wildlife preservation efforts and future research directions were identified through comparisons with international research. It is suggested that multi-disciplinary, cross-departmental, and international collaboration is necessary, and a national data integration platform should be established.
