Harmful algal blooms and their effects in coastal seas of Northern Europe

Bengt Karlson et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HAB) are a recurrent and widespread issue in northern Europe, affecting aquaculture industry and socioeconomic interests. The major HAB taxa causing fish mortalities include Chrysochromulina leadbeateri, Prymnesium polylepis, Phaeocystis spp., Dinophysis spp., and Alexandrium species. Continued monitoring and understanding of these HABs is essential to prevent and mitigate their impacts.

Prospective association between dietary pesticide exposure profiles and postmenopausal breast-cancer risk in the NutriNet-Sante' cohort

Pauline Rebouillat et al.

Summary: The study suggested a potential role of dietary pesticide exposure on postmenopausal breast cancer risk, with a negative association found between low exposure to synthetic pesticides and a positive association found between high exposure to specific pesticides and postmenopausal breast cancer risk, particularly among overweight and obese women.

Guidance Level for Brevetoxins in French Shellfish

Nathalie Arnich et al.

Summary: Brevetoxins (BTXs) are marine biotoxins causing neurotoxic shellfish poisoning. Despite not being regulated in France and Europe, BTXs were detected in mussels from Corsica Island. To address health risks associated with consumption of BTX-contaminated shellfish, a working group was established by the French Anses to propose guidance levels for BTXs in shellfish.

Sub-Acute Feeding Study of Saxitoxin to Mice Confirms the Effectiveness of Current Regulatory Limits for Paralytic Shellfish Toxins

Sarah C. Finch et al.

Summary: The study showed that intake of a certain shellfish toxin in mice did not have significant effects on multiple indicators, and the calculated safe dose for humans was much higher than the proposed value by the European Food Safety Authority. Therefore, the current regulatory limit for shellfish toxins seems appropriate.
