Low cost production of bacterial cellulose through statistical optimization and developing its composites for multipurpose applications

Zabin K. Bagewadi et al.

Summary: The investigation focuses on the enhanced production of bacterial cellulose (BC) from Enterobacter hormaechei subsp. steigerwaltii strain ZKE7 using different raw sources. Optimization achieved a 7.54-fold increase in BC production, reaching 31.7 g/L BC (In-situ). Composites made from the optimized BC demonstrated excellent water retention capability, moisture content, water release rate, porosity, thickness, and protein adsorption.

The Effect of Alginate Concentration on Crystallinity, Morphology, and Thermal Stability Properties of Hydroxyapatite/Alginate Composite

Wulandari Wulandari et al.

Summary: In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAp) and alginate (Alg) composite was synthesized by precipitation method. The crystal system of HAp was hexagonal according to XRD results. SEM images showed spherical particles with particle size distribution ranging from 400 to 1100 nm. EDS spectrum confirmed the interaction between alginate and hydroxyapatite in the synthesized composite. TGA-DTA analysis revealed that the HAp/Alg composite had a constant weight at 750 degrees C, indicating its potential for advanced applications such as bioimaging, drug carrier, and cancer treatments.

Immobilization of bacterial mixture of Klebsiella variicola FH-1 and Arthrobacter sp. NJ-1 enhances the bioremediation of atrazine-polluted soil environments

Zequn Pan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of IM-FN, a mixture of Arthrobacter sp. NJ-1 and Klebsiella variicola strain FH-1 immobilized using sodium alginate-CaCl2, on the degradation of atrazine. The optimal ratio of carrier materials was found to be 1:1:1, resulting in the highest adsorption capacity for atrazine at 30 degrees C. The IM-FN exhibited efficient degradation of atrazine, with a degradation efficiency of 98.23% achieved within 9 days.

Biochemistry, Synthesis, and Applications of Bacterial Cellulose: A Review

Snehasish Mishra et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanocomposites have huge potential in the fields of medicine and environment. However, there is still uncertainty regarding the molecular synthesis of cellulose and the arrangement of cellulose fibrils. Further research is needed to understand nanocellulose dispersion, fibrillar network disintegration, and the organic/polymer chemistry. The bacterial cellulose biosynthesis mechanism and the use of low-cost substrates for its production are also areas that require more investigation.
