Seasonal and plurennial changes of POPs repository in freshwater zooplankton: A 10-year study in the large deep subalpine Lake Maggiore (Italy)

Roberta Piscia et al.

Summary: Determining the concentration of POPs in the zooplankton is crucial for assessing environmental toxicity and ecosystem health. The accumulation of POPs in different components of the zooplankton community influences their persistence in the environment and impact on human health. Seasonal analysis of POPs in Lake Maggiore's crustacean zooplankton showed varying concentrations of total DDTs and sumPCB14. The zooplankton biomass increase in Spring played a significant role in storing POPs, with concentrations decreasing in recent years.

To what extent are filter feeder elasmobranchs exposed to marine pollution? A systematic review

G. Boldrocchi et al.

Summary: Despite the extinction risk, filter feeding elasmobranchs can be used as indicators of marine pollution. However, the current research is limited and mainly focuses on trace elements. Furthermore, filter feeders in different ocean basins have higher levels of mercury, arsenic, and cadmium, which pose potential risks to human consumers.

Cement and oil refining industries as the predominant sources of trace metal pollution in the Red Sea: A systematic study of element concentrations in the Red Sea zooplankton

Chunzhi Cai et al.

Summary: The concentrations of metals or metalloids in Red Sea zooplankton were mainly Ca Sr > Fe > Al > Zn > As > Cu > Mn > Cr > Mo > Ni > Pb > Cd, with As, Ca, and Cu concentrations significantly increasing with latitude while Cd concentrations decreased. Anthropogenic activities such as cement factories and oil refining industries may contribute to the high concentrations of certain elements in Central to North Red Sea zooplankton.

Bioaccumulation of PCBs, HCB and PAHs in the summer plankton from West Spitsbergen fjords

Anna Pouch et al.

Summary: This study examined the concentrations of seven PCBs, HCB, and twelve PAHs in plankton collected from different Arctic fjords. The study found that the concentrations of most contaminants were highest in the zooplankton species Themisto abyssorum, which could be attributed to its predatory feeding strategy. The study also observed significant biomagnification of PCBs and PAHs in zooplankton predator-prey pairs.

Legacy and emerging contaminants in the endangered filter feeder basking shark Cetorhinus maximus

G. Boldrocchi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of legacy, emerging contaminants and trace elements in multiple tissues of basking sharks for the first time. The skin showed higher concentrations of contaminants, indicating adsorption onto the dermal denticles. The contaminants in subcutaneous tissue and muscles were strongly correlated, suggesting that subcutaneous biopsies could be used as an early indicator of pollutant bioaccumulation in the Mediterranean Sea.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Seawater, Sediment and Biota of Neritic Ecosystems: Occurrence and Partition Study in Southern Ligurian Sea

Luca Rivoira et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean Sea is under high anthropogenic pressure, leading to the discharge of persistent organic pollutants from intensive industrial activities. These compounds can easily contaminate the entire marine ecosystem through water, sediment, and biota. The study found that both seasonal and human factors strongly influence the transfer of contaminants, with PAH and PCB contamination being more significant during the summer. Low molecular weight PAHs were mainly detected in the target matrices, while only a few congeners of PCBs were found. The bioaccumulation process in zooplankton was influenced by both living and feeding habits.

Summary: This study found that coral mucus plays an important role in the accumulation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), while high concentrations of OCPs in plankton may have a negative effect on corals.

Trace metal dynamics in mysids from the Cochin estuary

Abraham Biju et al.

Summary: Metal concentrations in two species of mysids from the Cochin estuary were studied during the monsoon and pre-monsoon periods. The data showed species-specific bioaccumulation with higher metal concentrations inR. indicusthanM. orientalis. These findings are important for environmental forensic investigations and bio-monitoring of metal pollutants.

Summary: The study investigated the presence and organotropism of trace elements in three tissues of 12 elasmobranch species. Results showed similar TE loads in different shark species, but different tissues had varying levels of different trace elements, illustrating the need for caution when selecting tissues for sampling.

Metal and metallothionein levels in zooplankton in relation to environmental exposure: spatial and temporal variability (Saronikos Gulf, Greece)

Evangelia Strogyloudi et al.

Summary: Metal and metallothionein in mixed zooplankton were studied to monitor metal availability in the Saronikos Gulf. Spatial and temporal variability of metal concentrations were observed, with higher levels in sites influenced by human pressures. Bioconcentration from water to zooplankton was found to be higher than other transfer pathways.

Persistent Organic Pollutants Burden, Trophic Magnification and Risk in a Pelagic Food Web from Coastal NW Mediterranean Sea

Javier Castro-Jimenez et al.

Summary: The study found that plankton has high storage capacity for PBDEs and PCDD/Fs, whereas PCBs preferentially bioaccumulate in higher trophic levels. Weekly intake of dioxin-like POPs has surpassed the EU tolerable intake levels. The research highlights the presence of toxic chemical pollution in Mediterranean coastal waters.

Organochlorine pesticides and heavy metals in the zooplankton, fishes, and shrimps of tropical shallow tidal creeks and the associated human health risk

Sanghamitra Basu et al.

Summary: The study indicates that tidal creeks in the Indian Sundarban are contaminated with organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and heavy metals (HMs), with high levels of OCPs in surface water but relatively low levels of HMs. The zooplankton community shows bioaccumulation of both OCPs and HMs, posing potential health risks to some edible biotas.

Ginevra Boldrocchi et al.

Summary: This study used social media data mining to analyze the number of blue sharks appearing near the Italian coast, revealing that these sharks regularly visited coastal habitats over the past decade. Differences in seasonal distribution of blue sharks by sex and size were observed, with certain coastal areas in Italy being preferred habitats for this species.
