The Colloidal Properties of Nanocellulose

Tobias Benselfelt et al.

Summary: Nanocelluloses are anisotropic nanoparticles of semicrystalline assemblies of glucan polymers that have great potential as renewable building blocks. However, to fully utilize their properties, a fundamental understanding of their colloidal behavior is necessary. This comprehensive Review combines experimental data and theoretical descriptions to describe the most prominent colloidal behaviors of nanocellulose and demonstrates how scientists can use this knowledge to control their assembly into new materials with exceptional properties.

Mie Sensing with Neural Networks: Recognition of Nano-Object Parameters, the Invisibility Point, and Restricted Models

Artur Movsesyan et al.

Summary: In this study, artificial neural networks are used to identify nano-objects based on the absorbance spectrum of a macroscopic sample. Two recognition schemes are developed, focusing on dielectric scatterers and gold nanospheres. Challenges arise near the invisibility point, with errors in radius recognition but small errors in refractive index recognition. These recognition schemes have potential applications in sensing technology.

Machine learning prediction of cellulose-rich materials from biomass pretreatment with ionic liquid solvents

Sanphawat Phromphithak et al.

Summary: In this study, machine learning algorithms were used to predict CRM properties in terms of CEF and SR, with the random forest algorithm showing the highest prediction accuracy with R-2 values of 0.94 for CEF and 0.84 for SR. Biomass characteristics and ILS treatment operating conditions were found to be highly influential in making predictions. One-and two-way partial dependence plots were used to explain the multi-dimensional relationships of the most important features. Our findings could be applied in designing new ILSs and optimizing the process conditions.

Influence of pretreatment and mechanical nanofibrillation energy on properties of nanofibers from Aspen cellulose

A. Balea et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the characteristics of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and the production process using bleached Aspen thermomechanical pulp as the raw material. It is found that both the pretreatment and the severity of the high-pressure homogenization play a crucial role in determining the fibrillation yield and the CNF morphology. The main properties of CNFs can be estimated from the carboxylic content of the pretreated pulp, facilitating the control and tuning of CNF production according to specific needs.
