Preoperative Chemotherapy for Operable Colon Cancer: Mature Results of an International Randomized Controlled Trial

Dion Morton et al.

Summary: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy shows potential benefits for locally advanced colon cancer compared to postoperative chemotherapy. In this study, patients with radiologically staged T3-4, N0-2, M0 colon cancer were randomly assigned to receive 6 weeks of preoperative oxaliplatin-fluoropyrimidine chemotherapy followed by either 18 or 24 weeks postoperatively. Results indicate that neoadjuvant chemotherapy results in marked downstaging of tumors and lower rates of incomplete resections and disease recurrence within 2 years.

Current Challenges and Opportunities of Photodynamic Therapy against Cancer

Ruben V. Huis V. In't Veld et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established, minimally invasive treatment for specific types of cancer. It generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induce cell death and disrupt the tumor area. PDT can also damage the tumor vasculature and release or expose damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) to initiate an antitumor immune response. However, there are challenges that limit its widespread clinical application. A literature study has identified these challenges and discussed opportunities for improvement.

Long-Lived Photoacid-Doped Conducting Composites Induce Photocurrent for Efficient Wound Healing

Haiyan Yin et al.

Summary: In this study, a light-powered dressing based on long-lived photoacid generator (PAG)-doped polyaniline composites is developed to facilitate wound healing. The dressing generates a photocurrent under visible light irradiation, which interacts with the endogenous electric field to promote skin growth. The PAG-induced acidic environment protects the wound from microbial infection. This simple and effective therapeutic strategy has great potential for wound treatment.

Cyclopentylmalononitrile dye as an efficient photosensitizer for combined photodynamic and water-dependent reversible photoacidity therapy

Lin Kang et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is widely used for clinical treatment of tumors, however, its high oxygen dependency limits its therapeutic efficacy for hypoxic tumors. A water-dependent reversible photoacidity (W-RPA) mechanism has been discovered as an oxygen-independent therapy with potential for tumor treatment. By designing and synthesizing a cyclopentylmalononitrile dye (BN-PEG5) with enhanced absorption in the red region, the advantages of combined PDT and W-RPA therapy in hypoxic tumor treatment have been demonstrated.

Photodynamic therapy in oral cancer: a review of clinical studies

Seyed Ali Mosaddad et al.

Summary: Oral cancer has a high mortality rate, especially when diagnosed at a late stage. Despite advances in treatment, the survival rates for oral cancer have only gradually improved. This poor success rate is mainly due to the development of secondary tumors, local recurrence, and regional failure. Invasive treatments often have negative effects on the appearance and function of survivors. Therefore, there is a need for novel approaches to manage this deadly disease based on these statistics.
