NASICON-Based Solid State Li-Fluoride Conversion Batteries Enabled by Constructing a Fluorine-Rich Trap for Ti4+

Yuping Gu et al.

Summary: A mesoporous fluorination interlayer based on high-surface-area AlF3 is proposed to improve the stability and compatibility of LATP/Li interface and enable the reversible operation of NASICON-type Li||FeF3 conversion batteries. It buffers the volume evolution, increases the Li-ion transference number, and promotes the formation of LiF domains. The F-rich interlayer traps the Ti4+ and retards its conversion to Ti3+ during the electrochemical process, while the electro-fusion process at the LATP/Li interface mitigates the anode resistance and guarantees the fast migration of Li+. The Li||Li symmetric cells exhibit stable cycling performance and high capacity with small voltage hysteresis.

Kinetics and Pore Formation of the Sodium Metal Anode on NASICON-Type Na3.4Zr2Si2.4P0.6O12 for Sodium Solid-State Batteries

Till Ortmann et al.

Summary: In recent years, reversible alkali metal anodes using solid electrolytes have been explored to increase the energy density of next-generation batteries. Na3.4Zr2Si2.4P0.6O12 has demonstrated potential as a solid electrolyte for solid-state sodium batteries due to its high ionic conductivity and stability with sodium metal. Analysis techniques such as impedance analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy have revealed the formation of a stable interphase at the Na|Na3.4Zr2Si2.4P0.6O12 interface. The study provides valuable insights into the evaluation of sodium metal anode performance in solid-state batteries.

Durable Li2CN2 Solid Electrolyte Interphase Wired by Carbon Nanodomains via In Situ Interface Lithiation to Enable Long-Cycling Li Metal Batteries

Qifan Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for the construction of an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) consisting of Li(2)CN(2) ionic conductor wired by carbon nanodomains on the surface of lithium metal. The Li(2)CN(2) conductor provides strong protection against the growth of lithium dendrites, while the wired carbon nanodomains promote electron connectivity and charge homogenization in the SEI. This configuration allows for high coulombic efficiency and long cycling life of lithium metal batteries.

Dynamic gel as artificial interphase layer for ultrahigh-rate and large-capacity lithium metal anode

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: Constructing a stable artificial solid-electrolyte interphase is an effective strategy to overcome the poor reversibility of lithium metal anode. However, the protection role is still insufficient under elevated current densities and large areal capacities. In this study, a dynamic gel with reversible imine groups was proposed as a protective layer for Li metal anode, offering high Young's modulus, strong ductility, and high ionic conductivity. The protected lithium metal anodes showed improved cycle stability and rate capability, demonstrating its potential application in large-scale energy storage systems.

Open framework perovskite derivate SEI with fluorinated heterogeneous nanodomains for practical Li-metal pouch cells

Chenglong Wu et al.

Summary: Tailored artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is proposed to stabilize Li metal batteries (LMBs) and suppress Li anode dendrite. The introduction of KF and Fe components in the nano-structural perovskite coating on Li anode enhances the interface conductivity and homogenizes Li-ion flux and Li-mass plating. The residual K3FeF6 component serves as an isotropic porous modulator to reduce local current density and mitigate electrode volume change.

Solid electrolyte interphases in lithium metal batteries

Ben Jagger et al.

Summary: Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted great interest as a higher energy density alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the poor cycle life of LMBs due to inhomogeneous lithium deposition and active lithium loss impedes their commercialization. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that forms on the anode surface plays a crucial role in controlling these issues, and current strategies are insufficient for achieving the necessary high cycling stabilities. Further research is needed to understand the SEI and guide future electrolyte design for safe and stable LMBs.
