Irradiation effects in high-entropy alloys and their applications

Zhaoyi Cheng et al.

Summary: This article reviews the research progress on the irradiation damage effects in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and focuses on various aspects including irradiation hardening and embrittlement, irradiation swelling, irradiation-induced segregation and phase transformation, helium behavior, and irradiation resistance mechanisms of HEAs. Additionally, it summarizes the excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and friction and wear resistance of HEAs. The article also outlines the future research hotspots for irradiation effects in HEAs and their potential applications.

Determinants of local chemical environments and magnetic moments of high-entropy alloys

Bo Li et al.

Summary: This study identifies the cohesive energy and band filling as descriptors for chemical bonding and magnetic interactions in high-entropy alloys (HEAs). The results show that the s-state cohesive energy determines the bonding strength trend, while the s-band filling determines the magnetic moments of CrMnFeCoNi HEAs. This research provides important insights into the fundamental physical picture of HEAs and facilitates the design of advanced structural alloys.

Tunable Chemical Disorder in Concentrated Alloys: Defect Physics and Radiation Performance

Yanwen Zhang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the development of advanced structural alloys with improved performance by tuning chemical disorder. The synthesis of multicomponent concentrated solid-solution alloys has expanded the compositional space for new alloy discovery. The tunable electronic structure and atomic-level diversity in these alloys allow for control of energy dissipation and energy transport mechanisms, leading to enhanced alloy properties.

The effects of irradiation on CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy and its derivatives

Zhouran Zhang et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have potential for intriguing combinations of mechanical and other properties, with focus on irradiation response such as high phase stability and resistance to radiation-induced segregation. The Cantor alloy and its derivatives exhibit encouraging irradiation resistance superior to traditional dilute alloys, showing smaller size but higher number density of dislocation loops, significantly lower extent of swelling and improved resistance to He bubble growth. Future research directions for irradiation resistant HEAs are suggested.

Vacancy dependent mechanical behaviors of high-entropy alloy

Jing Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of zero-dimensional defects, such as vacancies, on the mechanical properties of FeNiCoCrCu HEA using molecular dynamics simulation and machine learning. The presence of vacancy clusters disrupts the continuity of stacking faults and dislocations, resulting in reduced strength at room temperature. Additionally, anisotropy in the vacancy effect is observed, with a more pronounced effect on yield strength under the [100] loading direction compared to [110] and [111]. The study also predicts the combined effects of vacancy concentration and temperature on yield strength and dislocation density using machine learning, providing valuable insights for defect regulation in HEA design.

High-Entropy Alloys for Advanced Nuclear Applications

Ed J. Pickering et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) offer expanded compositional freedom for advanced nuclear applications, but our understanding of their irradiation responses is still in its infancy. While some studies suggest special irradiation damage resistance in HEAs, proposed mechanisms like sluggish diffusion and lattice distortion are not universally convincing, and unique differences in HEAs compared to conventional alloys may lie in factors like poor thermal conductivities.

Mechanical behavior of high-entropy alloys

Weidong Li et al.

Summary: Research in high-entropy alloys has been booming since the 2010s, focusing on the vast potential in compositions, microstructures, and properties. Efforts are mainly directed towards exploring the compositional space and microstructures, as well as understanding the mechanical behavior. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies on the mechanical behavior of high-entropy alloys.

Magnetically driven short-range order can explain anomalous measurements in CrCoNi

Flynn Walsh et al.

Summary: The presence, nature, and impact of chemical short-range order in the multi-principal element alloy CrCoNi are currently under debate, with first-principles calculations revealing a magnetic origin to this phenomenon. Models based on magnetic interactions are found to explain experimental anomalies, suggesting that short-range order of this type may be more common than previously realized.
