Functional Nanocomposites in the Development of Flexible Armor

Hassan Mahfuz et al.

Summary: The idea of flexible body armor has been improved by using shear thickening fluid (STF) as a backbone polymer to impregnate ballistic fibers such as Kevlar. The resistance to spike and ballistic penetration was increased by creating chemical bonds between particles and strongly attaching particles to the fiber. The new armor composite showed a 22-fold enhancement in normalized energy for spike penetration compared to the STF composite, indicating significant improvement.

Warp-knitted spacer fabric flexible composites with high stability and low-velocity impact resistance infused by flock-reinforced shear thickening gel

Yuhao Tan et al.

Summary: Flexible protective materials with suitable properties are essential for personal low-velocity impact protection. Flock-reinforced shear thickening gel (FRSTG) has great potential in this field but its unstable state and slight flow behavior hinder its evaluation and development. In this study, 3D warp-knitted spacer fabric (WKSF) composites with stable and LVI-resistant properties were obtained by infusing FRSTG in high proportions (>= 75%).

Structure Effect on Damage Evolution of 3-D Angle-interlock Woven Composites Under Low-velocity Impact By Coupled DIC Analysis and Numerical Study

Wenjing Cao et al.

Summary: Impact damage distribution is crucial for designing composite structures with high-impact damage tolerances. In this study, the initiation, evolution, and distribution of impact damage in woven composites were investigated. The woven structure was found to greatly influence the damage propagation and the distribution of strain and stress. The high strength and straight arrangement of the weft yarn contributed to its high deformation resistance, large stress value, and wide stress distribution. On the other hand, the crimp of the warp yarn limited the stress distribution, leading to stress and damage concentration.

Summary: In this study, a solvent-evaporation approach was used to microencapsulate a multifunctional self-adaptive material, called ionic liquid-based shear thickening fluid (ILSTF). The resulting microcapsules exhibited high thermal stability and controllable size, and were incorporated into an elastomer matrix to enhance energy absorption ability. The ILSTF microcapsules also showed potential for applications in deformable circuits and battery safety.

Effect of fiber hybridization on tensile fracture of 3D woven textile composites

M. Pankow et al.

Summary: 3D woven composites can handle higher damage tolerance. Hybridization of fibers is an additional method for improved damage tolerance. This study investigates the tensile response of hybrid 3D woven composites for the first time. Hybridization increases the modulus with increasing carbon fiber volume fraction, but decreases the strength in proportion to the carbon fiber volume fraction. Although the carbon fibers fail, the material remains intact due to the intact glass fibers, maintaining 80% of the strength.

A new route to fabricate flexible, breathable composites with advanced thermal management capability for wearable electronics

Huibao Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, flexible and breathable composites with advanced thermal management capability were fabricated by coating boron nitride nanosheets layer on the grids of electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane fibrous mats. The composite not only showed significantly enhanced thermal conductivity but also maintained its breathability. When integrated into flexible devices, the composite exhibited a lower saturating operating temperature compared to pure Ecoflex packaging. Furthermore, it showed minimal surface temperature fluctuation during bending-releasing process and remained stable after more than 2000 cycles. A prototype for wearable electronics with advanced thermal management capability was also proposed.

Effects of Flocks Doping on the Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Shear Thickening Gel

Yuhao Tan et al.

Summary: In this experiment, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was used as the dispersed phase and mold silicone was used as the continuous phase to prepare a shear thickening gel (STG) doped with flocks using rotary stirring. The study found that both the rotary stirring sample preparation and the rheological test method of the rotary rheometer could lead to the regular arrangement of flocks but could not accurately reflect shear thickening performance. The flocks showed a random arrangement in the gel after the mixing process, and their dynamic mechanical properties were measured using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). Flocks with a fineness of 3 Denier, 1 mm in length, and a mass ratio of 5% had significant effects on the dynamic mechanical properties of the gel. However, when the sweeping frequency exceeded 125 Hz, the flocks were arranged regularly due to long continuous shearing time, resulting in a decline in the shear thickening performance of the doped gel.
