Effects of dietary starch and metformin levels on the growth performance, body composition, hepatic glycolipid metabolism, and liver histology of juvenile largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides

Qin-Qin Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of dietary metformin inclusion on the growth performance, body composition, glucose homeostasis, and liver histology of juvenile largemouth bass fed high starch diets. The results showed that increasing dietary starch levels impaired growth performance and glucose metabolism. Dietary metformin improved glucose homeostasis but did not mitigate liver injuries in fish fed high starch diets.

Nitrite Stress Induces Oxidative Stress and Leads to Muscle Quality Decreased in Wuchang Bream (Megalobrama amblycephala Yih) Juveniles

Zhenyi Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of acute nitrite exposure on muscle quality and physiological functions in Wuchang bream were investigated. The results showed that nitrite exposure resulted in increased levels of blood glucose, cortisol, AST, and ALT, as well as increased LDH activity. Furthermore, the exposure led to increased T-AOC and CAT activity in the liver, while muscle glycogen concentration decreased. Muscle hardness was also significantly higher in the experimental groups compared to the control group. These findings suggest that acute nitrite exposure can induce oxidative stress and decrease muscle quality in Wuchang bream, accompanied by changes in serum biochemical index, liver antioxidant capacity, muscle physiological characteristics, and muscle physical characteristics.

Hypoxia regulates cytokines expression and neutrophils migration by ERK signaling in zebrafish

Shi-min He et al.

Summary: This study utilized zebrafish as an aquatic model animal to investigate the effects of reduced dissolved oxygen in water on the immune functions of fish and potential regulatory mechanisms. The results showed that hypoxia significantly increased the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and promoted neutrophil migration. Furthermore, the activation of the ERK signaling pathway was found to play a role in this process.

Summary: In this study, the key structural gene PdTHC2'GT in the biosynthesis pathway of Isosalipurposide (ISP) was identified in tree peony. The study also revealed the roles of CHS and CHI genes in anthocyanin accumulation. These findings provide valuable insights into the biosynthesis of ISP and potential candidate genes for tree peony breeding.

Yanpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that 30-day exposure to 0.3 mg/L nitrite may promote protein catabolism to provide energy to activate defense, and detoxification can completely reverse this effect; 60-day exposure to nitrite may disrupt defense system, cause histopathological damage, and affect energy metabolism, resulting in decreased appetite.

Summary: The exposure to nitrate had adverse effects on turbot, including hypoxic stress, disruption of osmoregulation and metabolism, abnormal apoptosis, and disruption of redox status. The toxicity of nitrate exposure was dose-dependent, peaked on the 15th day, and could cause long-term irreversible damage to fish.
