Octenyl succinate acidolysis carboxymethyl sesbania gum with high esterification degree: preparation, characterization and performance

Hongbo Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, high esterification of acidolysis carboxymethyl sesbania gum was achieved using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride as a solvent, octenyl succinic anhydride as an esterifying agent, and pyridine as a catalyst. The derivatives obtained exhibited good emulsifying capacity and stability. Acidolysis had a different effect on the crystalline structure of sesbania gum compared to carboxymethylation. Esterification completely destroyed the crystalline structure, resulting in rougher surface of the gum particles. The storage modulus of sesbania gum and its derivatives increased with angular frequency, but the increase was different for carboxymethyl sesbania gum. The introduction of carboxymethyl and octenyl succinate groups led to the appearance of C=O and C=C bonds. Sesbania gum not only showed excellent hydrophilicity and permeability due to the presence of hydroxide radicals, but it was also non-toxic and biodegradable.

Polysaccharide gum based network hydrogels for controlled drug delivery of ceftriaxone: Synthesis, characterization and biomedical evaluations

Baljit Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, dietary fibers gum acacia (GA) and tragacanth gum (TG) were utilized to design a drug delivery (DD) carrier that can degrade in the colon. The resulting product was a polyacrylamide (poly(AAm)) hydrogel network. Various characterization techniques confirmed the formation of the grafted product and its heterogeneous and amorphous nature. The release of the antibiotic drug ceftriaxone from the network hydrogel was slow and controlled, demonstrating its potential for site-specific drug delivery.

Drug release and thermal properties of magnetic cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanocomposite hydrogels based on poly(acrylic acid-g-N-isopropyl acrylamide) grafted onto gum ghatti

Pragnesh N. Dave et al.

Summary: The study aimed to understand the drug release characteristics of Gg-cl-poly(NIPA-co-AA)/CoFe2O4 hydrogel containing metformin hydrochloride. Gum ghatti-based hydrogel with acrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide as graft copolymers was used for controlled release. The hydrogel was characterized using FTIR, SEM, TGA, and DSC. Drug release occurred through diffusion and polymer relaxation, regardless of drug solubility. In vitro release studies at different pH values showed pH 7.4 as the optimal pH for maximum release. The hydrogel loaded with metformin hydrochloride exhibited sustained release, fitting the Korsmeyer-Peppas model with a specific case II transport mechanism.

In Vitro Release of Metformin HCl from Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)-Gelatin Hydrogels Prepared by Gamma Irradiation

Hariyanti et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to prepare a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) - gelatin-based hydrogel by gamma-rays irradiation for the immobilization of Metformin HCl (MH). The results showed that as the gelatin concentration increased, the gel fraction increased and water absorption decreased, resulting in a decrease in the cumulative drug released. The hydrogel exhibited a heterogeneous porous structure and can be considered as a matrix for controlled drug release, which is safe for humans.

Carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan-chitosan complex nanogels stabilized double emulsions incorporated into alginate hydrogel beads for the encapsulation, protection and delivery of probiotics

Xiaoqing Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, double emulsions encapsulated by calcium-alginate hydrogel beads system (ACGs) were developed for intestinal-targeted delivery of probiotics. The experimental results showed that ACG-2 and ACG-3 hydrogel beads had sustained release properties in simulated intestinal fluid and high cell viability. Moreover, the alginate concentration in ACGs hydrogel beads influenced the swelling behavior and structure, thus mediating the release of probiotics.
