A major Miocene deepwater mud canopy system: The North Sabah-Pagasa Wedge, northwestern Borneo

C. K. Morley et al.

Summary: Research on the enigmatic deepwater shale nappe region in northern offshore Sabah, Malaysia has found evidence of major mobile shale activity. This activity has led to the formation of mini-basins, mud pipes, chambers, and volcanoes, including an extensive mud volcano complex consisting of around 50 mud volcano centers. The presence of these mud volcanoes indicates the generation of large volumes of gas within the area.

Late Eocene-early Miocene provenance evolution of the Crocker Fan in the southern South China Sea

Yuchi Cui et al.

Summary: This paper conducts an integrated analysis on the potential provenance terranes and restores source-to-sink pathways of the Crocker Fan in the southern South China Sea. The results show that the fan was initially formed over the Cretaceous-lower/middle Eocene Rajang Group by an angular unconformity. From the late Eocene to the early Miocene, it received voluminous detritus from the Malay Peninsula of the western Sundaland. The Crocker Fan successions formed high-quality reservoirs in the region.

?Where, when and why? for the arc-trench gap from Mesozoic Paleo-Pacific subduction zone: Sabah Triassic-Cretaceous igneous records in East Borneo

Yuejun Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the Mesozoic subduction along the coastal areas of Southeast Asia using various geological dating methods. The study finds that the formation of these rocks is closely related to crustal subduction and magmatic activities, providing evidence for a long-term material recycling process of subduction in the region.

Early Cretaceous subduction in NW Kalimantan: Geochronological and geochemical constraints from the Raya and Mensibau igneous rocks

Yuejun Wang et al.

Summary: The research indicates that the Raya Volcanics and Mensibau batholith in NW Kalimantan were formed in the Early Cretaceous, derived from a mantle wedge modified by recycled sediments and juvenile mafic crust. This confirms the geological evolution pattern of the Kuching zone.

Strontium isotope stratigraphy of late Cenozoic fossiliferous marine deposits in North Borneo (Brunei, and Sarawak, Malaysia)

Laszlo Kocsis et al.

Summary: Neogene marine deposits in North Borneo contain abundant fossils that provide insights into past biodiversity. Strontium isotope stratigraphy is used to obtain more precise relative dating, and most measured ages are consistent with existing chronostratigraphic framework. However, some age results challenge current stratigraphic studies and require further research and revision.

Geochemistry and paleogeography of the Rajang Group, Northwest Borneo, Malaysia

Zuofei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examines the provenance history of the Rajang Group in Borneo through a combination of bulk rock geochemistry, zircon morphological analysis, and U-Pb geochronology. It finds that the Rajang Group was primarily sourced from a late Mesozoic magmatic belt before the Paleocene, and later from older crustal sources. The study also reveals uplift and denudation of the lower Rajang Group in the Late Eocene based on sediment recycling signals in the overlying Tatau Formation.

Provenance of Oligocene-Miocene sedimentary rocks in the Cuu Long and Nam Con Son basins, Vietnam and early history of the Mekong River

H. Tim Breitfeld et al.

Summary: The Cuu Long and Nam Con Son basins in Southeast Vietnam are important hydrocarbon-bearing basins in the South China Sea, and their study contributes to understanding the evolution of major river systems in Southeast Asia. The findings show similarities in the provenance of these two basins, indicating a comparable evolution of a large river system. The early evolution of the Mekong River may have involved two river systems, which later underwent significant reorganization.

Late Cretaceous Nature of SW Borneo and Paleo-Pacific Subduction: New Insights from the Granitoids in the Schwaner Mountains

Xin Qian et al.

Summary: This paper presents new data on the Cretaceous granitoids in SW Borneo and discusses their significance in investigating the Paleo-Pacific subduction and regional correlation. The study shows that these granitoids were formed in a continental arc setting during the Late Cretaceous and can be compared to contemporaneous granites in NW Borneo. Additionally, Late Cretaceous granitoids with A-type affinities in eastern Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore might have formed in a back-arc extensional setting after the Paleo-Pacific subduction.

B. Batara et al.

Summary: The study reveals arc-related magmatic activity in South Borneo during the Cretaceous, with igneous suites predominantly being low-K tholeiitic, calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline. Two subduction systems existed beneath Sundaland, leading to the formation of various magmatic arcs and melanges.

Geochemistry of thePalaeocene-EoceneUpper Kelalan Formation,NWBorneo: Implications on palaeoweathering, tectonic setting, and provenance

Nagarajan Ramasamy et al.

Summary: The stratigraphic records of the Palaeocene-Eocene provide valuable information on environmental and climatic signals. The study of turbiditic sedimentary rocks in NW Borneo reveals insights into palaeoweathering, tectonic setting, and provenance, with a primary source area of felsic rocks from the Schwaner Mountains. The sediments suggest a transition from an active continental margin setting in the Palaeocene to a passive margin setting in the Eocene.

Provenance study of the Lubok Antu Melange from the Lupar valley, West Sarawak, Borneo: Implications for the closure of eastern Meso-Tethys?

Qi Zhao et al.

Summary: The study of the Lubok Antu Melange reveals that its maximum depositional age is approximately 115 to 105 million years ago, sourced from a Mesozoic continental arc related to the Paleo-Pacific subduction, with possible contributions from West Borneo, the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra. A change in source is recorded in the late Cretaceous, shifting from erosion of basement magmatic rocks of the Paleo-Pacific subduction-related arc to the Schwaner Mountains arc of SW Borneo. This suggests rapid uplift and exhumation of the Schwaner Mountains in the late Cretaceous, indicating potential geological changes in SW Borneo and the closure of the eastern Meso-Tethys during that time.

New zircon radiometric U-Pb ages and Lu-Hf isotopic data from the ultramafic-mafic sequences of Ranau and Telupid (Sabah, eastern Malaysia): Time to reconsider the geological evolution of Southeast Asia?

Basilios Tsikouras et al.

Summary: New U-Pb geochronology findings from Sabah, Malaysia suggest that mafic-ultramafic rocks in the region were not ophiolitic and did not form during the Jurassic-Cretaceous period, as previously believed, but rather originated from a magmatic event in the Miocene. These rocks show evidence of both mantle-derived and crustal components, with the involvement of a crustal component possibly linked to the evolving Miocene oceanic basin in the area.

Summary: The study of Cretaceous rocks in the Da Lat Zone of SE Vietnam revealed volcanic arc magmatism starting in the Early Cretaceous, continuing into the mid to Late Cretaceous. Granitoid basement rocks in the Cuu Long Basin showed similar ages, while the youngest magmatic phase was interpreted as within-plate magmatism.
